I have taken frequently taken kava since the mid-1990s. I also get semi-annual physicals that include liver function tests. Every test has shown excellent numbers for liver health. As other reviewers have written, kava root is safe. The harm can come from unscrupulous merchants who cut costs by including stems and roots, which can cause liver damage. I purchase organic kava from a Hawaiian company...

I was taking 40 mg of Prozac daily and was weaned off at the recommendation of my psychiatrist. I would sometimes still battle with panic attacks and anxiety so I took kava without seeking medical advice. Even though it helped my anxiety I experienced HEAVY sleepiness which affected my work and moderate to sometimes severe stomach pains in just a short amount of time. This is very unusual for me I...

The Kava root tea really works! The drops and capsules do not help. I have been using this for a week and have been getting the best sleep I have had in over five years. I don't have any hangover, nor do I yet notice any side effects. This works better than the prescription sleeping meds I have used. I am willing, at this point. to take the possible risk to my liver. although I think the liver concerns might have been exaggerated. I used the root from Pacific Botanics.

I had been working since I was 16 and was completely healthy until about 16 months ago when I was diagnosed (finally, after seeing 4 doctors!)with Fibromyalgia. I didnt even believe in the condition until I got it! Wow! Do I feel stupid now! I have taken the 84% Kavalactone capsules and made the Kava Instant Drink, both with no results! Im afraid I have the reverse tolerance that Ive been reading about all night...meanwhile, Im still in pain on a daily basis with a doctor that doesnt care! :( When will I find a doctor that will listen to me or a medicine and/or herb that will help me ease some of this pain?!?!Read More Read Less

Recent visit to a Kava Bar to hear a favorite band. Drank one Kava drink and became intensely nausea then vomited. Condition continued for 48 hours at which time went to the ER. Elevated Lipase level causing concern for Pancreatitis. Admitted on IV's, electrolyte replacement, PPI's, CT and MRI, GI consult, etc. Will never drink Kava again.

Kava tea (Yogi is my brand of choice) has been an old reliable remedy for relaxation and promoting a good night's sleep.

I have taken 1-2 kava capules/day for several years with NO liver damage or other scary side effects. Kava capules are sold at health food stores in bottles of 75mg each. I have neuro condition known as essential tremor and I found that Kava combined with a prescription med helps reduce the tremor in my hands. Otherwise, I cannot write. Not interested in taking other meds prescribed for ET because of the VERY significant side effects they are known to have. Any med or supplement can be overdosed, but I have had no bad experience with kava taken at 75-150 mg/day.Read More Read Less

The reason countries are banning this is becuase of large pharmecutical companies fighting against it. If people with anxiety find out how good this is there will be no need for anxiety sedatives!!!!!

I take 10 gtts. of Kava before bedtime along with 75mg. Trazadone and sleep incredibly well. I am never hungover in the morning and I never have muscular pain when I wake up. I did not want to increase my Trazadone.

You need to get your facts straight before writing a medical article. The "liver damage" that you refer to was caused not by Kava root ,so well tolerated for thousands of years throughout the Pacific basin. There was a single episode of Kava contaminated by an unscrupulous grower with the vine itself. It was the added vine (not the usual root) that caused the short episode of hepatic toxicity. Since then, the growers from Hawaii to Fiji have done a superb job of policing themselves. I have used Kava for multiple patients needing a "natural" treatment for anxiety, insomnia and muscle spasm without any untoward effects.Read More Read Less

Currently taking Kava Kava Plus (with St Johns Wort) for anxiety and depression. Effects are short-lived (five hours or so) but the tincture definitely makes a difference in my mental and physical well-being. I go from being tense and sick-feeling to relaxed and almost completely normal.

Kava tea was given to me at a party. 1 hour later I experienced severe diarrhea. The next morning, my central nervous system feels out of whack and heightened.

liver damage occurs ONLY when the stuff is made fro the leaves and stems, it does NOT happen when you consume the roots. Please look up the reports and people in the Islands in SP for Millenia and do not all drop dead from liver damage.

I use this to calm myself....I have had a very rare cancer in the past and only have one adrenal gland. This helps my stress level and I've taken the pills as well as drink the tea. Not together. I believe this works quite well!!

during a recent study by ncbi, kava has very weak gaba binding activity so it apparently can be used for benzo withdrawal. works great for me. anybody have contrary info, let me know.

The liver problems only arise when the kava preparation includes stems and leaves, as these are toxic. The root powder does not contain these toxins. The scare and subsequent banning came from preparations made in the early 90's that were extracts made using leaves and stems as well as roots, and many people who took it became very ill.

I suffered for over a year with IBS. Doctors wanted me to sample all the prescriptions available and since they didn't work I declined. I used Kava Kava to get my stress under control and it was the only thing that worked for me. As long as I keep the stress under control the IBS has not returned. It is fabulous!

Great as a stand alone Anxiolitic, but basically if you are withdrawing from Benzo's,then it is contraindicated as it acts upon the same GABA receptor sites. The idea of withdrawal is to let your body and brain recoup from down regulation and repair the GABA functions to normal. Not confuse them even more.Same caution should be exercised with all GABA-ergics.

used for anti-anxiety, main reason for this post is that the kava leaves are poisonous and thats what caused liver damage. root is okay to use and thats what needs to be displayed on the supplement facts.
