I have taken frequently taken kava since the mid-1990s. I also get semi-annual physicals that include liver function tests. Every test has shown excellent numbers for liver health. As other reviewers have written, kava root is safe. The harm can come from unscrupulous merchants who cut costs by including stems and roots, which can cause liver damage. I purchase organic kava from a Hawaiian company...

I was taking 40 mg of Prozac daily and was weaned off at the recommendation of my psychiatrist. I would sometimes still battle with panic attacks and anxiety so I took kava without seeking medical advice. Even though it helped my anxiety I experienced HEAVY sleepiness which affected my work and moderate to sometimes severe stomach pains in just a short amount of time. This is very unusual for me I...

Just a question. If this root should not be taken with alcohol then why is it sold with alcohol usp 65% -70% mix? Sounds dangerous.

When I feel anxiety attack brewing I take two 425mg Kava Kava capsules and my anxiety dissipates. I feel nothing unusual except my anxiety is significantly reduced or gone. I have experienced no noticeable side effects although I take them on an as needed basis not as a daily supplement.

I learned about Kava Kava while researching an upcoming trip I had to Hawaii. I purchased Kava Kava in its ground form and made the traditional South Pacific recipe by mashing the raw, ground kava root into coconut milk. I purchased a cloth strainer that works great for this purpose and I really enjoy the traditional method. It takes some time to mash into the milk and needs to be done by hand to be effective. However, I don't always have time to make this drink. I've found the pills to be very effective tool in these times. Kava Kava is best described as a mind opening herb. The root helps me to take in my surroundings and open my mind for critical listening and critical thinking. It also is an effective pain killer and sedative. I don't usually take Kava Kava at night, however. I find it best to take my Kava in the morning or early afternoon. Usually I like taking it to assist with my interactions between coworkers and customers; I'm in the retail and home improvement industry. Kava puts me in a good state to take in information and process it with a level head. It definitely helps with Anxiety and also has helped with my minor aches and pains. I recommend Kava to anyone and everyone, it is one of mother earth's best medicines. Read More Read Less

I have used freshly prepared kava 'tea' for about 6 years to control my anxiety before speeches, flights, and exams with good results. I learned how to use it when I visited Samoa, and it really is best prepared in the traditional manner - very safe and effective. As others have said, make sure you get it from a reputable source. Ground stems will make you ill - it must be the root only. I order it online from Hawaii or a kava bar on the mainland. Too much in one sitting will give you a raw stomach. Read More Read Less

The best herb hands down for anxiety. Keeps you calm in very stressful situations or while traveling.

Kava is a lifesaver for me. Contrary to what the article states, Kava is no longer banned in Canada so I was very happy to purchase it here again, I tried many supplements and prescription pills but none calmed me without doping me as well as Kava.

My experience is that Kava extract *of pure Vanuatu Kava root* makes me sleep quite deeply. Please read the label carefully! If it doesn't say "certified pure Vanatu Kava root" then you're getting a junk tincture made from the plant's stems & leaves -- and that causes the liver damage mentioned in a post below. Plus it'll also be ineffective. Please, make sure the label guarantees 100% pure Vanuatu Kava root. It does work. Just don't let yourself be sold junk or 'cut' discount varietes. Be vigilant with the label ingredient reading.Read More Read Less

I didn't use Kava Extract specifically for withdrawal, but I got stellar results using it *instead of* my normal benzopdiazpine. So from that I'd logically assume it'd work for the withdrawal process --since it successfully proxied *for* my normal prescribed benzo. Of course I go a bit above the extract's recommended dose, i.e. instead of counting 30-60 drops exactly I simply squirt about 10 mL right into my mouth. And that amount, 10 mL, at first gives me a 'warm' relaxed feeling, then I go into a very deep sleep for a solid 8 hrs. Not sure that it gives a 'euphoria', I think it's more like a slight anti-depressant effect. But yes, the right amount will make you sleep quite well. A little too well, possibly. So in conclusion I'd not hesitate to recommend this for benzodiazpeine withdrawal, from my experiences with pure Kava extract. Because of it's 'warmly' relaxing effect I'd tend to believe it could be quite useful in cases of opiate withdrawal, too.Read More Read Less

It works for anxiety ok but if you take a little too much it works your liver really hard. This is not from reading warning labels. This is from personal experience. I thought it was back pain but it wasnt. Be careful. Yes I was taking a little more than I should have but not too much more. Scary stuff.

For all of the people on this site saying Kava Kava is safe, I'm going to have to disagree. I used Kava Kava in pill form for insomnia for 2 years on and off. I had to have an abrupt liver transplant last year because my liver was 90% dead tissue. I almost lost my life because of this herb. Thank God for second chances! I highly recommend staying away from this herb or any other herb for that matter that isn't regulated or tested. I tried to do the right thing by taking a "natural" herb, and failed miserably. Had I been taking ambien for insomnia, I wouldn't have had to go through this. My whole life has now changed. If you are thinking of trying this herb, please don't. Research the dangers. I was ignorant enough to think that if it's natural it won't hurt you. And by the way, I was not eating/taking the roots and/or leaves as some are suggesting is the only dangerous part of this plant. I bought the pills from a reputable herb shop in my hometown. Please be careful when using this herb.Read More Read Less

I have had anxiety for most of my life which has resulted in insomnia for the past 30 years. The only thing that has helped me sleep are prescription sleep aids, which my doctor does not recommend. I accidentally came upon Kava and have been using it for about 2 months. I finally am getting 8 hours of sleep a night with 200 mg. plus 5 mg of melatonin (which never worked for me before). I feel so much better, more alert and more energy and no more restless legs or being out of it the next day. FINALLY, FINALLY! Read More Read Less
