After being diagnosed with Thrombocytosis and extremely high counts this drug seems to have been the answer. I take 2mg/day and have been for the last 5 years. The only side effect I still have is rapid heart beat. My counts have remained at a controllable level. I still have monthly blood tests and see my Oncologist every three months but at this point in time I will remain on this drug.

I am a 50 yr old female, and have been taking anagrelide 0.5mg X4 daily. I too,in the beginning, had severe heart beating; had to go visit a cardiologist, my BP soared and having severe heart palpatations.Initially, also had vomiting, horrible headaches, diahrrea, and severe dizziness-- currently, I have none of these symptom, but now, my RBC is going way down, due to effects of this medication. ...

Aneglaride has been effective in reducing my platelets from ~650 to ~350. It’s easy to take but the heart palpitations and elevated BP is an issue. I eat something prior to taking it and I drink one cup of decaf/day. I have ~ 2 ounces of ETOH/day. I exercise regularly. I wonder if a time release capsule would help alleviate the rapid heart beat. I’m not an anxious person but the elevated HR sometimes also produces anxiety. Is there a med to reduce HR? I’m being evaluated by cardiology/heart monitor. Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with ET about 8 years ago. I will be 60 in 3 months. I started out at .5 mg 2x a day, and progressed to 1 mg 2x a day. This drug controlled my platelets, as long as I took each dose. The morning pill gave me an increased heart rate that became increasingly uncomfortable. Also my RBC was low. My doctor put me on one 500mg of hydrea in the morning and one, 1 mg of anagralide on the evening (that dose didn't give me noticeable hear palpitations). Today I had a blood test and my platelets were 684. She increased the hydrea dosage to two pills in the morning. Hopefully the platelets will go down, to within the normal range, without my RBC going down any further. I take 2 iron pills a day to help RBC. Read More Read Less

MD noticed elevated platelets for over a year, sent to oncologist, had bone marrow aspiration (ouch!), megakaryocytes are producing too many platelets, so went on Agralyn, later generic anagrelide. I take 0.5 mg 2 x day, and for years now (since 2005)my platelets are between 275K and 325K, very stable. I get quarterly blood tests and semi-annual hematologist/oncologist visits. If I take too much, accidentally taking them less than 8 hours apart, I get a terrible terrible migrane that lasts up to 2 days of nausea and pounding temples. If I skip a dose, I don't notice it physically, only when the next time is due and the pill is looking up at me from the box. I don't usually take the skipped dose unless I know I can space the next two 8+ hours apart (to catch up, like 6 am, 3 pm, midnight, then 8 am next morning). Doctor told me NOT to get pregnant while on this drug, and don't get pregnant if NOT taking this drug - I have only one child. This condition was not seen until after I'd had my baby. With ET, not sure if this may or may not have had something to do with its onset.Read More Read Less

I began taking anagrelide Jan. 2011. At present I am taking 2.5 mg at 6 a.m. , 2mg 6 p.m. My platelets fluctuate between 500,000 and 750,000. My major complaints are morning diarrhea, swollen ankles which I thought was due to water retention but now feel it is circulation. See the oncologist in a few weeks and will discuss. Did have 2 heavy nosebleeds in the past week, the last taking me to the ER. Could be med or Arizona desert dryness and pollen or both. Blood pressure is higher since I started on this med. so another example of 1 med requiring a different med to take care of side effects?Read More Read Less

I took hydrea for about a year and a half and then put on anagrelide one a day and am now up to three in the morning and three at night. in addition, I take hydrea twice a week. my platelets stay high and now my dr awants me to have a bone marrow biopsy. My kidney function keeps dropping down to 28 now and I know these drugs affect the kidneys. I often think I would rather not take the hydrea or anagrelide and take my chances to save my kidney`s. I know a lot about dyalisis and want to stay off of it at all costs. Read More Read Less

I have ET and have been on .25 x6 per day along with 500 mg Hydroxyurea, and a baby aspirin. occasional headaches, heart palpitations and other annoying issues that are inconsistent. I have started to take ambien to get to sleep every once in a while so the heart pounding won't wake me up completely. I feel trapped taking this medicine, but feel it's the only option to keep my platelets down to 400,000. Yuck! I also worry about what it's doing to our livers, and kidneys???

I am a 31 year old woman with Thrombocythemia. I had a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby girl while taking Anagrelide. The biggest issue was the dosing. My dosage was often adjusted to try and regulate my platelets.

My oncologist says, that if I stop meds.-- my platelets will soar up to the millions again. Also, that I must take it for my entire life-- it is hard-- which is the lesser of evils-- being on this med, or off it??? Both decisions have severe consequences. I am still trying to decide!!!:(Read More Read Less

My mother has been on this drug for about 2 years and platelet counts continue to go over 1.2 million. She now needs blood transfusions regularly to replace red blood cells that are being destroyed by the medication. She is highly allergic to Hydrea so we are running out of options.

The medication has been effective as far as controlling the platelet count, very easy to take, but over all i am not satisfied with the side effects that come with it.It has left me with no strength, all my joints hurt,my knees creak and hurt,I'm tired all the time, absolutely no energy,so I'm very frustated that the side effects have affected my quality of life.

I have been on anagrelide for 3 years now. When I first began this medicine I too had the racing heart and anxious feelings. In fact, with each added dose this would happen frequently. I am now up to four doses per day and I still sometimes feel a racing heart beat but nothing like when I first began this medication. I am happy with my results as my platelets seem to stay between 400,000 and 500,000. My platelets used to range from 900,000 to 1,000,000. So I am happy with my results and so is my doctor who I am very confident of. Read More Read Less
