I have in the past dealt with nightmares from being shot, being knifed, being in a car bomb and being attacked on guard duty. I am being clinically followed at a VA hospital. This drug, at 1mg, has taken me from being a person that screams at night, waking up my wife, cold sweats and torrid sleep, to now having a peaceful night of sleep and wonderful dreams.

I have had nightmares for years due to childhood abuse. 3 years ago my middle son was in a car accident and was on life support for 2 weeks. I could not sleep due to very vivd nightmares, panic attacks so bad I could not breathe, even after my son made a full recovery. It has been 3 years 3 months at 2mg at bedtime. I rarely remember having any dreams at all of any type. Recently I was hospitalized for COPD, they did not give me my meds. The very 1st night I had a nightmare where my son died, very vividly, in a car accident. This medicine has been life changing. I also take an antidepressant in combination and have no nightmares, no panic attacks and no side effects. I was wondering if long term use could cause memory problems. I don't know if it is the medications being used long term or something new to add to my list of medical conditions. Read More Read Less

Husband is a medically retired 23-year military veteran with PTSD, TBI, etc. He was prescribed this for PTSD nightmares and it doesn't help him at all. It made him worse with vivid dreams (not nightmares or terrors though) that made him restless (sleep talking and very active body movements allll night long), nausea, headache, severely dizzy and lightheaded. He feels worse after a few days and looks like a zombie from lack of rest. Won't be taking that again.

I tried taking it for a week for my nightmares but it only made them worse. It also made it feel like I had play-dough in my mouth so I stopped taking it.

I am a 62 year old male, taking 1-mg 3 times a day. spreading them out seems odd after reading the reviews, gonna ask my doctor about it. I have had no side effects, I do have very odd dreams, but no more terrors, and no inhibitions in my dreams, I do some weird stuff in them sometimes. I also wake up feeling good, instead of suicidal like I did for years. And for some reason, the medicine gives me an added sex drive and ability, though being single, this is not so great. I like this medicine, it's better than nightmares and screaming and cursing in my sleep. I will cautiously raise my dose as I want to keep the side effects away.Read More Read Less

This has been a really rough month on prazosin. I have toughed it out hoping things would get better. I wake with panic attacks all night, I feel like I have asthma, I am eating constantly, and I want to sleep all day. I have missed tons of work. I still have nightmares but, my inhibitions are gone in them because the adrenaline doesn't freeze me. So, I do bad stuff in my dreams. It sucks. I am going off this medication tonight!

This medication has been a godsend to me. I've had nightmares for years since the Vietnam war. The doctor put me on this medication a year ago and my nightmares have been cut by 90%.

I have not been able to sleep due to domestic abuse, current and past. My doctor put me on this med again recently because I stopped. F day one, I finally slept most of the night not worrying that something is about to happen. Psychotherapy is wonderful, especially while I'm awake, but when I sleep, I can't practice the techniques, so far no major side effect

I started this med 2 months ago for nightmares at 1mg, then increased to 2mg,helped with the nightmares, but have began having paralyzing panic attacks when awakening! My Dr. said this should be a help with that, but they're not getting any better! My Dr. increased my dose to 4mg and also put me on Zoloft for my anxiety/depression, but the two combined are not helping. Now I'm having to take 1.5mg of Xanax just to get through the mornings. Ugh... Has anyone else had this adverse effect? I can't do the panic attacks much longer, they're exhausting. My Dr. and I are at a loss. Any input would be greatly appreciated.Read More Read Less

I suffer from PTSD caused by domestic abuse and witnessing a traumatic event. I was plagued with nightmares every single night. I would wake up screaming and in a full blown panic attack that would take hours to calm down from. I eventually stopped sleeping. My dr. prescribed this as a last resort when everything else had failed. I really wished we would have started here. Since I have been taking it, my nightmares are gone. At first I didn't seem to have any dreams, but as time has gone on, I will occasionally have a dream, though it is usually fragmented and doesn't make any sense. This medication has been a lifesaver for me.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed this as a sleep aid due to nightmares. I couldnt say if the nightmares were helped because I was kept awake all night(s) due to twitching and itching like in meth withdrawal! I felt as if I was awake all night. I have since changed to taking it in the morning and will see if that will allow for sleep. still unrested but less anxious.

I was originally prescribed this medication in hospital for night terrors. I was immediately impressed. It did not seem to just alter my dreams, but actually erase them. At first I was delighted, but then it started to cause me alarm. But as my body got used to the medication my dreams slowly returned. And the context was different. I don't think affable is quite the right word, but I can say I enjoyed sleeping more. Now for the downside. Having read some of the other reviews I feel like I can agree on some points. Dizinness. Of course. What do you expect. I had some heart flutters. My biggest bitch was the occasional incontinence. It is extremely inconvenient. That's all I have to say. But to put things in perspective: I take 5mg and I am schizophrenic. Read More Read Less

I started taking this for nightmares but it ended up helping me with my anxiety adrenelene. I had less attacks and when I would get stressed the amount of time the anxiety attacks would last were greatly reduced. You have to give this medicine time to work.

I've always had extremely vivid, sensory intensive dreams. The dreams turned into nightmares in my twenties and got progressively worse. After the death of my mom 2 years ago, the nightmares were so bad that I was afraid to go to sleep. My spouse would wake me up at least 3 nights a week because I was crying or screaming. I would wake up in full panic mode and the feeling would stick with me all day. I first tried prazosin 2mg when I was on effexor, and it caused extreme blood pressure swings and fainting. 2 years later, off effexor, my Dr. prescribed 1mg and it made a big difference. I'm now on 3mg and my night terrors are gone. I still have vivid dreams but they aren't terrifying anymore. I have a harder time getting up in the morning, but at least I'm sleeping. My husband hasn't needed to wake me up in nearly 3 months. Life changing. I recommend adjusting the dose very carefully. Read More Read Less
