I started taking Prilosec under direction of a gastroenterologist in 1992, which I think may have been very close to the when it was first available. I had severe Barrett's Esophagus and was having emergency endoscopies about once a year. I took it 365 days a year from about 1996 until early this year. The scarring in my esophagus has almost completely healed, which is wonderful. Unfortunately, I ...

Dr calls it GERD, nasty acid reflux, bending over can get really vile backwash, after eating I feel like I have a huge "bubble" that does not want to go up or down. Negative for ulcer and H.Pylori, I also take thyroid meds, hungry all the time. I take the 20mg Prilosec (generic) first thing in AM by bedtime it is worn off so I take a big slug of Maalox and sleep partially sitting up. I have put on...

Started taking generic brand 7 days ago. First 3 days I felt great, but 4th day got sick to my stomach like I wanted to throw up. Have had stomach pain and diarrhea every morning since. Stomach pain last all day and I have to take an antacids to help. Thought and hoped this would work. My neighbor and my father both take it and works great for them. Just not working for me. My Dr. called in protonix for me but haven't picked it up yet. Have appt. With him in 2 days.

began with nexium, couldn't tolerate the side effects, so switched to prilosec 20mg daily, and when it was only partially effective, was soon increased to 40mg daily. weight gain has been a constant struggle my entire life, and i attributed the 30lbs i gained over 5 years, muscle aches to getting older. with allergies all my life, the headaches were probably sinus related. and i've had arthroscopic surgery on one knee, so that, along with aging, was blamed for the joint pain. i attributed the lack of energy to depression in combination with aging, associated with the additional weight gain. was i in for a surprise when i stopped prilosec! first, there was the inevitable rebound, and it was very bad, leaving me suffering around the clock for almost 3 months. i would awaken with acid resting in and burning my throat. 2 months after stopping prilosec, this improved gradually. next, i noticed my clothes no longer fit, and i discovered i had lost 30lbs in 3 months, without changing in my diet. my energy levels increased, no more depression, phantom muscle or joint pain, and no more surprise "sinus" headaches. i thought i had thoroughly researched this medication over the 5 years i took it daily, but i obviously was too satisfied with the heartburn relief, and the symptoms were so gradual and relatively minor, that i missed all of the evidence of these multiple, major side effects. i'm feeling so much better after stopping prilosec, i will never take this medication again, even with occasional heartburn. my doctor doesn't agree, but until i find a solution that doesn't affect so many aspects of my life, prilosec is simply not worth it.Read More Read Less

In terms of the burning feeling, this drug worked. BUT, I developed symptoms I had not had before, such as extreme gas and bloating. The rebound coming off this stuff is miserable, and I wish I had never taken it to begin with!

I am lactose intolerant and suffered severe diarrhea for days before finding out there was lactose in it. This product should be labeled better for having lactose in it

I've been taking this PPI for over 10 years, 5 years ago I started taking it twice a day. I never was told of any problems at all, just that it as "a good safe and effective" drug. after I started taking 2 a day I started getting bad headaches, cramp like abdominal pains, off and on fevers & chills, sweating, sometimes a light rash and semi-intense itching on my trunk and arms, sometimes wheezing and trouble catching my breath. a couple of years ago I was hospitalized with pine along my spine. after much testing it was found the I have severe "stress cracks" all along my spine along with cloudy spinal fluid SOOOOOO. 5 months in a hospital room on a 24 hr 7 day a week I.V. The next year after a bit over 4 months out I again was hospitalized this time with C dip (Clostridiun difficile) and soooooo we spent nearly 7 months in the hospital and rehab units most of the time in isolation.... Now I am told that PPI's effect how my warfarin works... I've seen the long listing of all the precautions Prilosec and the other PPI's....but what else can one use nowadays that won't have such a list, (after time).Read More Read Less

never had trouble with heartburn. my problem was thick pleghm in throat and felt like throat was swollen or something stuck in it. Had trouble swollowing food. Pulmonary doctor kept giving me inhalers which seamed to make me feel worse. One day i had so much phelgm in my throat i felt as if i was drowning. Went to ENT who gave me prilosec and it has cleared it all up. I have the side effect of loose stool and stomach sounds. Have only taken it two weeks and will be going to a gastrologist this week. I sinerely hope to fix the side effect because it is great not to be choking on pleghm anymore. i eat better, breathh better and my mental state is much better. Read More Read Less

I was coughing every night and some during the day. Felt like there was a lump in my throat and always swallowing. Finally went to an ENT Dr. and he diagnosised me with GERD. After 90 days of taking meds I can sleep at night. Coughing gone. Feel much better.

I bite tablet in half. It has been working good. Pills last twice as long and half the risk of side efects. Zantac doesn't work.

I tried Zantec for almost a year. It didn't work. I know the health risks of Prilosec. I would rather die happy than misarable. No option. I cant do without. Not an option.
