I started taking Prilosec under direction of a gastroenterologist in 1992, which I think may have been very close to the when it was first available. I had severe Barrett's Esophagus and was having emergency endoscopies about once a year. I took it 365 days a year from about 1996 until early this year. The scarring in my esophagus has almost completely healed, which is wonderful. Unfortunately, I ...

Dr calls it GERD, nasty acid reflux, bending over can get really vile backwash, after eating I feel like I have a huge "bubble" that does not want to go up or down. Negative for ulcer and H.Pylori, I also take thyroid meds, hungry all the time. I take the 20mg Prilosec (generic) first thing in AM by bedtime it is worn off so I take a big slug of Maalox and sleep partially sitting up. I have put on...

I have been on Prilosec, prescribed by my Dr., for over 15 years. Over that time I have had increasing symptoms of joint pain, made made much by even very small amounts of caffeine. Also I have had very low vitamin D, B12, magnesium and probably other unknown nutrients. With my Doctor's approval, I lowered my Prilosec to 10mg. every other day, and now to none at all. I seem to be managing the reflux ok, and although it is too soon to be sure, my other symptoms seem to be going away.

Once I started taking it, if I tried to stop the acid reflux returned the next day. So frustrating since I never wanted to take this for a long period of time. How can I stop taking it and not have it return?

I took this drug for approximately 4 years and noticed a negative change in my body over time. More fatigue, poor sleep, and slower brain function. I don't recommend this drug to anyone since it kills your acid production, which is critical for nutrient absorption and preventing bad bacteria build-up in the stomach and gut. The drug alleviates the symptoms, but doesn't solve the problem (GERD). Check to make sure you have enough acid production for proper digestion before you assume you have too much acid. Changing my diet by limiting heavy unhealthy starches & sugars (donuts, cake, pasta, fried food, bread, etc.) taking probiotics, and exercise have allowed me to wean off this medication and my heartburn is now controlled. Doctors pushed these meds on me because pharmacuetical companies pushed it on them. I recommend looking at alternative natural remedies before you make the same mistake I did on these meds. They aren't easy meds to stop...you have to wean off. Sidenote - These ppi's increase risk of osteoperosis when you get older due to nutrient malabsorption.Read More Read Less

A gastroenterologist put me on this long term and after several months I started developing serious side effects and though I had pancreatic cancer. When I learned this drug had been known to cause pancreatitis, I discontinued use and the symptoms disappeared. Would never take this for any extended period as I believe it can be very dangerous to some people.

This medication is very effective in stopping acid reflux, however I have severe side effects. My blood pressure rose from normal 120/80 to 145/90 and higher at times. I also had hot flashes, feelings of pins and needles and cold chills all at the same time. Caused anxiety, sleeplessness snd overall not feeling well. This has been a very difficult four weeks. Hope to find something else/

I started taking this to counteract the way I felt when I had to take 9 ibuprofen a day for a leg problem. It helped me feel more normal then, but now I don't take that many ibuprofen and the side effects are bothersome. I feel like if I didn't have my head attached, I'd leave it somewhere. My sleep pattern is all thrown off, and it was normal before this latest round of omeprazol. I also feel tired, maybe from the sleep problems. I don't have anemia, but my blood pressure was lower than usual. Overall, I'm talking with my doctor to see if I really need to take this anymore, because I just don't feel like myself when I take it, even if that feeling will go away when I stop. After being on this med, I noticed I was belching a lot. Then the gas started. I went off to see if symptoms would go away and they did. My doc suggested taking gas x. I will give this a try.

drug interaction with Celexa which had worked controlled my anxiety beautifully for 10 years. Suddenly after using 2 weeks of 40 mg of omeprazole, I have developed terrible anxiety. Will this eventually go away. It has been more than 45 days. I am taking klonopin to control anxiety. Is there too much serotonin in my body caused by the omeprazole? Will it eventually go away? I am at my wits end.

I took this drug for 4 months. the ulcer has healed. However, I experienced significant hairloss, splitting nails, and tiredness. I believe it was interfering with my synthroid. I am no longer taking the Prilosec, and am feeling less tired. Hopefully the hairloss, and splitting nails will improve as well

I have lupus, fibromyalgia and gastroparesis, so many of the side effects mentioned, I was suffering before I started prilosec, joint pain, bloating, acid reflux, fatigue, fogginess are all systems of my diagnosed conditions. My labs haven't shown any vitamin D or B-12 deficiency, but I have suffered bone density loss, likely related to prednisone use. I've taken omeprazole off and on for about 5-6 years but have been using daily for ab/18 months now... considering tapering off in case more adverse side effects.... not sure what to do, given the side effects indicated appear to be symptoms I exepreience regardless because of my health problems that caused me to need the medication in the first place Posssibly try natural mean. Good luck to all searching for remedies to gastric problems... I suggest faith and prayer. God BlessRead More Read Less

Started OTC Prilosec 4 years ago when an MD suggested it for reflux caused by radiation treatments for breast cancer. Was satisfied until a year ago when I experienced bloating, swelling of ankles, feeling full for hours after a meal, weight gain, and nighttime reflux. Read some articles and decided to quit taking it. Suffered horrible rebound acid for 3 weeks but now no more reflux, no bloating, swelling, no more feeling full from dinner when I wake up in the morning and best of all no reflux. I do not recommend this medication for long term use. Read More Read Less

I've been taking omeprazole (generic form) for many years for heartburn and acid reflux; however, it didn't prevent damage to my esophagus. Within the about the last 12 or so months I've also been experiencing nausea every morning. I wish I could get by without it because not only are the capsules difficult for me to swallow, but it's been causing chronic diarrhea and cramping since day one. I've tried doing without it, but the reflux got so bad that I couldn't stand it. I wish someone could invent an anti-reflux drug or something other than a drug that wouldn't have these awful side effects. I've tried other things on the market, but they don't help at all.
