I started taking Prilosec under direction of a gastroenterologist in 1992, which I think may have been very close to the when it was first available. I had severe Barrett's Esophagus and was having emergency endoscopies about once a year. I took it 365 days a year from about 1996 until early this year. The scarring in my esophagus has almost completely healed, which is wonderful. Unfortunately, I ...

Dr calls it GERD, nasty acid reflux, bending over can get really vile backwash, after eating I feel like I have a huge "bubble" that does not want to go up or down. Negative for ulcer and H.Pylori, I also take thyroid meds, hungry all the time. I take the 20mg Prilosec (generic) first thing in AM by bedtime it is worn off so I take a big slug of Maalox and sleep partially sitting up. I have put on...

Are there any studies that show long term use of Prilosec OTC can be harmful? I used it twice as recommended and it worked great, but I still suffered from heartburn/acid indigestion, more so when I lay down at night, though I do experience it during the day on occasion. I can’t afford health insurance, so I decided to continue to use Prilosec OTC on a regular basis for my comfort. I’ve been taking it for about 9 months or more, every other day, and I cut the pill in half. I have no side affects and feel great. The last time (over 8 months ago) I spoke to a doctor about the use of it, (cardiologist) he said that I can continue to use it if it’s helping me. I’m turning 49 years old, 5’11.5”, 204 lbs., and take Vytorin (half a pill every other day) and Amlodipine-Benaz (1 pill every other day). My blood work was good about 4 months ago.Read More Read Less

I like taking this drug, however, I am not sure if the combination of Prilosec OTC and Lexapro make my bones hurt. Does prolonged use have this effect?

I have developed a terrible case of acid reflux over the years, and Prilosec (generic) is the only drug I've found that effectively treats it. Even Nexium didn't help me. Granted, I have an unusually tough case and require 80 mg./day, which I know is a very high dose. However, it works well for me, with no side effects. I was advised by a gastroenterologist to take the whole dose in the morning 30 min. before breakfast. Only very rarely do I have a problem with indigestion.

Prilosec 20 mg had been very helpful to me. I have suffered for years with gastro problems and acid reflux. The only thing I don't like is that my stomach gets bloated really bad and I feel full all the time. I only take it when I have flare-ups because of that reason. A few days after I quit taking it the bloating and the full feeling goes away. I do feel tired all the time but never really thought of this medication being the cause (after reading other reviews). I have been on this medication for over a year and it has helped me.Read More Read Less

I had shortness of breath/chest pains and pulmonary doctor prescribed this medication. As soon as I took it the first time, I stopped gasping for air, and I felt I can breath again. I had taken Prevacid and Nexium, but they do not work like Prilosec.

This medication and others like it cause water weight gain in the feet, hands and especially the mid-section (belly) which only complicates the problem of pressure related to the stomach and esophogus. Not to mention the joint pain due to all of the excess fluid. Lethargy always accompanies drug use. We trade one disease for another unless the drug is a cure for the disease (which these medicines are not). Furthermore, once you stop taking it, the buringing is worse than ever before and so you almost become addicted to using it. I wonder how many folks have a malfunctioning gall bladder which is causing the problem and therefore these medications are only a band-aide fix for a larger concern. Also, these types of medications, including other anti-acids cause your bones to be weak. Counter to what we have been told about anti-acids being good sources of calcium. Perhaps, but your body needs the acid to rid the bones of old bone material. Otherwise, it just keeps building up causing bones to become brittle. Read More Read Less

The Prilosec worked well controlling my GERD. But in the literature there is conflicting information. They seem to mention that you should only take it for 14 days except for certain conditions, but they sell it over the counter in 30 day increments. I took it for 4 months not knowing this. I had some stomach distress (nausea) at times. The worst was that my ankles and feet started swelling and my liver enzymes shot up. After reviewing literature on the internet I discovered that a) I probably took it too long. b)It can cause serious liver issues in some patients and c) When I quit taking it my stomach produced WAY more acid than it had previously. Almost like it was making up for lost time. I have been off of it for a month and my swelling is gone. I will find our about the liver function in a week. The acid reflux is still worse than before the Prilosec, but it's calming down a bit each day. Advice: make sure you keep an eye on your liver function. It's not a common reaction, but it is mentioned as a very serious potential reaction in the literature.Read More Read Less

I'm a male who just had a mammogram. I am growing breast tissue due to prilosec. No one told me about this side effect, but its evidently quite common. Pain under the nipple is what caused me to mention it to the doctor.

About 3 years ago a Ear Nose and Throat doctor prescribed me this with a cost of $100.00 since I took the RX kind. Unfortunately I could only take it for a week because of the side effects, which were much worse than the actual acid reflex. Side effects included: horrible headaches, dizziness, a feeling of being out of it and constipation so bad it plugged me up for a week. Next I'll be trying Prevacid, I hope to experience better results.

I've had acid reflux for my entire adult life (40+ years). My father had acid reflux all his life (82 years). I took this medication one morning and haven't had stomache problems since. It worked the first day! Must have something to do with B-12, iron, vitamin D absorption. The only side effect might be lethargy. 10 days into the initial 14 day treatment I was exhausted. Sleeping all day Saturday helped, but I'm still not as energetic as I was.

Interesting to hear about hair loss and flu like symptoms. I have both although the flu like symptoms may be Fibromyalgia. I do have to watch what I eat and how much for example Italian food which I love! I would not stop taking this medicine. Nothing works as well as this.

I thank all the previous reviewers. I was prescribed this for asthma - the doctor said heartburn is related to asthma symptoms (personally I think the asthma is related to my high IgE count) I've had no heart burn...BUT...it's come with flu like symptoms and diarrhea. Going back to Pepcid. Which worked fine to begin with.

I have been taking this drug for a year to help me with my acid reflux. It works very well for that but it has cause side effects for me that I have endured over the last year and was not able to pin point until recently. It caused me to become vitamin D deficient, I gained about 30 pounds, I have experience hair loss and my joints and muscles have been weak and in pain for a year. I decided to try not taking this product for a few days to see if my joint and muscle symtoms would clear up and they are. Follow the directions on the packet. Do not exceed 14 days of treatment unless your doctor prescribes it.Read More Read Less
