I had clear skin my entire life until I hit the age of 21. Suddenly I had horrible acne all over my cheeks, jawline and around the sides of my mouth (at all times, not just during period). It was so bad that I rarely left my room, and I wouldn't even let my boyfriend see me unless the lighting in the room was extremely dim. Suddenly, I stopped hanging out with friends and couldn't even bare going...

**** Migraines - acne - hair loss - swelling**** I have suffered from migraines since the 2nd grade. I've tried nearly everything since then. The last 5 years the migraines were extremely bad, 3-4 a week. My family doctor tried to help to no avail and sent me to the specialist. Although they helped with meds for the pain, as for the prevention pills nothing worked. I also had acne, hair loss, and I never sweat. I finally went to a dermatologist for my skin and hair loss. She gave me spironolactone 50mg 2x a day and told me to use minoxidil. A year and half later... my hair is so much thicker, looks so much better, my acne is gone but the greatest thing I didn't expect are my migraines have decreased so much. In fact I just went 30 days without one migraine. I've also noticed that I don't get all swollen anymore from not sweating too! This medication has helped me a lot, I'm concerned with how long I should take it though.Read More Read Less

Have been prescribed with another blood pressure medication Amlodipine. I take at present 25mg, but no affect just a constant headache and head pain with some fast heart rate. Can anyone say if they have had any of the effects mentioned here. I would like to continue this drug as I've tried so many others all causing some effect or another.

I was prescribed this drug by my dermatologist for acne. My chin and body would break out especially around my menstrual cycle. This has completely cleared me up and my cramps are not as bad/periods don’t last as long. She gets my blood tested a few times a year to be sure my potassium is okay, so far so good!

My cardiologist put me on Spironolactone 25MG for high blood pressure (systolic in 140s). After 10 days on this medicine, I developed terrible intestinal pains and diarrhea. I continued to take it until I did my 2-weeks blood test, then I stopped taking it because I still had pains and diarrhea. I let the doctor know and the message I received back was that he was OK with my going off the Spironolactone for 2 weeks. This is my third day off the medication (after taking it for 13 days) and I still have the diarrhea and pains (for 6 days now). I hope it lets up soon. Blood pressures actually higher than on previous treatment medications.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed this drug for the edema I have been dealing with for over 15 years. I do not have heart failure. I drug does send me to the bathroom, I have to drink at least 100 oz of water a day. When I don't my kidney function is affected. Also I was diagnosed with scarred alopecia and lost a lot of hair. This drug has not helped my hair growth. My biggest advice if you are taking this drug, drink a lot of water. It does cause dehydration and will affect kidney creatinine and BUN levels. I plan to discuss replacing this drug with something else during my next Endocrinologist visit coming up in July.Read More Read Less

I want to mention that this drug is an effective tool to medically transition. No where in its literature does it mention that this drug has this potential. I am also quite happy with the reduced acne side effect.

My doctor put me on spironolactone because of my heart condition in Sept 2016. It is supposed to help minimize my left ventricular systolic irregularities (I also have a pacemaker/ICD implant). Now, two years later and after an elevated potassium blood test, I have concluded that the symptoms I have experienced over the last two years are bacause of this drug. I have never had a problem with water retention but my doctor was hoping it would help with the vtach episodes I have experienced. I recently had the dosage cut to 12.5 mg but the occasional symptoms of nausea, dizziness, stomach/abdominal discomfort, ed, and muscle spasms are becoming more troublesome. Will be speaking to my cardiologist about whether or not I will remain on this drug. I understand the reason for prescribing it but am concerned about the increasing side effects. I also had a series of gastro tests done this year thinking that was my problems but those tests produced negative results.Read More Read Less

Nine months after discontinuing the high potassium levels persist and kidney function continues to deteriorate. I was told this was the gold standard for treating ascites. It did nothing for reducing fluid and added other serious problems. There is no antidote for this drug.

This is the first medication that has finally helped control my blood pressure, I take 100mg daily along with several other BP meds and have been pretty stable at 110/65 for several months. However, it has caused me to develop quite pronounced breasts with noticable nipples. They are now at a 38B size and I have started to wear a sports bra to compress them. This is after 6 months of use. My doctors don't want me to stop taking it but I hope they stop growing. My doctor wants me to have a mammogram now due to the rapid growth.Read More Read Less

This drug is fantastic for hormonal acne. I had bad acne as a teen, and while most of it went away, I have had nasty cystic zits on my chin since then. I'm 40 now, had tried all kinds of OTC and prescription creams and washes that didn't do much. So my dermatologist suggested spironolactone, and it changed EVERYTHING. I went from 1-4 zits all the time to maybe one, small, quick-healing pimple when I have my period. Be sure to give it a couple of months to allow the drug to work and allow the side effects to fade. I don't have side effects now that I've been taking it for 5 month, but during the first month or two I had some bleeding outside of my period. It took about that long for the positive effects to kick in, too. It was frustrating but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Read More Read Less

Lowered testosterone and lessened hair growth on 50mg a day dose, however, side effects too severe to keep taking. Very quick weight gain, edema in lower legs and arms that will not go away. Swollen face and caused fine downy like hair growth "peach Fuzz" all over my ENTIRE body! I was reduced to 25mg a day when I complained of side effects and then on next blood test my testosterone level was higher than it was prior to starting medication, so I was raised back up to 50mg and weight gain was dramatic and quick! So although it slowed down male pattern hair growth and effectively lowered testosterone, it created a whole new problem that is even harder to get rid of. I took this medication for 2.5 years because my endocrinologist told me it is the only option for women with high testosterone /PCOS other than trying Metformin which will not work for me as I don't have any insulin resistance problems. It is so sad there is not a product for women when so many of us suffer from these problems. I quit the spironolactone about 2 months ago and still have "pockets of swelling" all over my lower legs and cannot get rid of this furry hair that is literally covering my entire body. I would not recommend this pill to anyone. I view this as pure poison and I am so tired of women's health issues being treated with "off-label" uses instead of getting to the root of the problems. Birth Control pills should not be the only option to help women who are suffering. Read More Read Less

I started on 100 mg QD of spironolactone and I am now on 200 mg QD for female pattern baldness. Used in conjunction with biotin, this medication has helped in speeding up hair growth. I have tons of baby hairs growing and my hair part has thinned. Unfortunately, one major side effect that has made life (slightly) more difficult for me is the increased urge to urinate. There are nights I wake up 5-6 times in an 8-hour period to pee. You really have to watch your water intake prior to sleeping on this med...Read More Read Less
