I'm writing this review to set the record straight. First of all, I'm a 20 year old college student who has never had a child before. My doctor and I made the decision to go with Mirena because of complications with the birth control pill OrthoTriCyclen Lo. After reading many negative reviews about Mirena- I was very hesitant to go through with getting it. I was so nervous I delayed getting ...

Had after 5 months having it very dizzy vertigo spell very fatigue and I think may cause something in my brain like those silent tumors I’m not the only person to review about this brain thing . Benin tumor look alike thing they found developed after mirena. A lot dizziness affecting my daily lid life after removal no joke even 30 minutes later I see the difference I don’t get dizzy turning my head looking. At cars I’m happy I remuu oh es it wouldn’t recommend this at all.

Hi! This is my 4th year with Mirena. So far I had a good experience. I used to suffer heavy periods and Mirena made my periods really light/crampless for around 3 years. Now that it's my 4th year I stopped having it (You can either have light periods or no periods at all is normal!). A lot of people say putting it hurts, yet I did not have that experience, the only burden was for around 20 mins after putting it in (it's just cramps, they do hurt but go away) Anyway, I had it since I was 16 and currently 20, really good if you have an active sexual life. I'm 48 and peri menopausal and I got the Mirena 3 months ago for 3 reasons. To help with my irregular periods, birth control and for the HRT. The insertion was a little uncomfortable its the same as getting a smear, it only last 2 mins. My doctor was so nice and she made me feel at ease.I had periods pains for about 2 weeks after. I got my period the month after and I've had none since. I'm finding it great. If this stops my irregular periods and pain for the next 5 years I'll be a happy camper.Read More Read Less

PLEASE READ!!!!!!! Apparently it wasn't for me...I am 49... Had 1st mirena put in about 3 years ago. Bled for the first year aLot and finally stopped all together. (LOBED IT!!) After having it for about a year and a half, I started experiencing extreme bloating, horrible mood swings, depression, burning sensation down my groin and into my left leg, developed anxiety, painful sex. Went to doctor's multiple times, was given different antidepressants. I started thinking I'm going crazy! Then I started feeling like I was in labor. Took a pregnancy test in a panic... negative..wld lay on a heating pad to get rid of the pain and just have some comfort. Went back to Obgyn, was told they cld feel strings and that i was fine. After 3 months of living this craziness, I demanded to see another doctor. Finally got someone to listen and had ultrasound done. Which showed my IUD had traveled into my uterine muscle wall. And that is why I was feeling labor pains, because my uterus was rejecting it and trying to push it out. So I was actually having labor pains!! Was told it was possibly put in wrong and this is why I was having such issues. I did love the fact that I finally didnt have periods because my whole life I have suffered long, heavy periods.... So my doctor talked me into doing the IUD under ultrasound to make sure it was placed properly with the possibility of my body rejecting it but at least then we wld know. Soooo it's been a year and I'm back to square one... Getting it removed permanently my body is just not accepting it. I think it's so important for women to see this because the doctors (and family) had me thinking I was losing my mind!! Women listen to your body!!! It may be for some but it also isn't for others they never tell u any of this when you get it. Read More Read Less

I am 50 years old and I inserted the mirena after the recommendation of my doctor a year ago. I suffered from heavy bleeding for about 2 years due to endometrial hyperplasia. The bleeding lasted 25 days a month. After 1 year I have droplet bleeding about 15 days a month but it doesn't bother me at all. My psychology is quite good and with diet I have lost about 5 kilos which I had gained due to period disorders. No discomfort or pain except for a little during insertion. I recommend it for heavy bleeding.Read More Read Less

Awful side effects that my health care professional was not upfront about. Thankful for the web and face book support groups that made me decide enough was enough and get it taken out before I turned into a person I didn’t want to be.

It was great the 5+ and another 5+ years a had it, very rarely had a period , and I had no issues what so even until it was time to take the 2nd one out . I had to get it removed at the emergency room because I tried to do it myself but I couldn’t and as soon as I slightly pulled the string I began getting cold sweats and severe cramping, when I got to the hospital they pulled it out but the mirena was wide open ! I thought it was suppose to close coming out . It was an excruciating pain ! Like someone stabbed me 10 times where the insert was , I don’t think they pulled it out correct but I’m so glad it’s out , I feel like my normal self like a weight was lifted off of my shoulder and a huge peaceful release. Bleeding started 2 days later. If I have any problems I will come back to this post, but so far so good.Read More Read Less

I got the mirena coil after severe bleeding post pregnancy. It has been life changing in the best possible way - I hadn’t realised how badly I suffered during my period over many years. Now I’m on the mirena coil they are light and I get barely any pain. It stopped the post pregnancy bleeding too. I’m glad I persevered through the initial months of continual bleeding on mirena (not fun at all!) as I’m now 5 years into using it and highly recommend it

Made my thyroid issues worse to the point I now have a autoimmune disease that I will have the rest of my life after 1st try. My 2nd try with it 2 yrs later and I'm convinced it's what cause my thyroid issues and I was only on for 2 months and my thyroid levels were cut in half even though I took my meds as always. So the progesterone in it directly effected my thyroid that I went from stable numbers of 5.32 all the way down to 2.12 I. Just two months.

I’ve had a Mirena for 3 years now and it has completely changed my life for the better. I got it for heavy periods and iron deficiency anemia. I had one period after insertion and haven’t bled since. I’ve had no side effects. Don’t be afraid of the pain if you are considering an IUD—for me the insertion was extremely painful but lasted less than a second and there was no lingering pain like with a flu shot or a piercing. Talk to your doctor about options for medication if you’re nervous. I was offered Xanax but didn’t end up taking it. Read More Read Less

I’ve read quite a few negative reviews of the mirena coil but I just wanted to share mine as it’s a positive one! I have has the mirena coil for 3 months now. I had some Uterine polyps removed and at the same time the doctor put in the mirena coil as he said it would help with my really heavy periods whilst thinning the uterine lining and hopefully stopping the abnormal bleeding between periods I had had for years which was extremely annoying! Well I’m on my 3rd month and I am really happy with the results! My periods have been soo light. I can’t remember the last time I haven’t needed to change a pad or tampon more than once in an hour. Now I barely need to use any sanitary products, it’s great! So far I am really pleased with the coil and I wish I had gotten it sooner! I am 38 and have two children. The added benefit of contraception is also great! Read More Read Less

Age 49, reason for having Mirena...perimenopausal heavy bleeds. It doesn't do what it 'claims'. I am 7 months in and still bleeding/spotting. If it's meant to thin the lining of your uterus how the hell am I still bleeding? I thought I had researched enough but no. Mirena research has 50-100 women as test patients. How is that supposed to give decent results? I live in New Zealand so all costs are free, but it still doesn't account for spending 7 months of your life in anticipation with no result. I will wait out for a year but then I will get it taken out. At least with periods as heavy as they are at my age at least I know what I am getting. This is a whole new level of WTF and affects your social and intimate life. I am fortunate enough to have a great hubby and kids! May work for some but looking at reviews they seem to be outweighing the positive. In regards to side effects ...no cramps, no acne, no hair loss...... and when inserted all I can say is if you can handle natural child birth you can handle this.......different for everyone. I walked home afterwards (15 min). Good luck everyone, but as far as I'm concerned this is a fail and has affected 7 months of my life.Read More Read Less

I am 28 years old and have 5 young children, my last being triplets, so I decided to have the iud inserted! It was the most horrible experience ever. Since the moment I had it in I had non stop ovary pain and cramping, specifically on my right. Every time my husband and I had sexual intercourse it would hurt also with slight bleeding afterwards. I went to my GP, had ultrasounds and they couldn’t find the problem. My dr prescribed me antibiotics assuming it was Adenomyosis. After completing the dose I still thought I’d follow advice to let the iud settle and see how I went after 6 months but nothing changed so got the iud removed and I’m so glad I did. I haven’t experience anymore pain/cramping and irregular bleeding but my period has however gotten a lot heavier since removing it than it was before. I understand the IUD works for some but it didn’t for me. Read More Read Less

I was 30 yrs old when my IUD was inserted. I just had my third child and needed a form of birth control. The pain, to be honest, wasn't terrible, some mild cramping, but not terrible. However, within the first few months of having the IUD I experienced some of the worst mental health effects I could possibly have...uncharacteristic hostility and anger toward my family, mainly my husband, resentment, blame. My husband gently advised me that maybe the cause was the IUD and that I should maybe think about getting it removed. I didn't believe him and my mental health continued to decline to the point I had thoughts of suicide. I began to ostracize myself from family and friends. I lost weight to the point you could see my tailbone and sternum just below my skin. I was on the verge of divorcing my husband, we started couples counseling and he begged me to get the IUD removed. I did, after having it for 18 mos. It took quite a while after that to finally feel more like myself. I wanted to write this review to let all women know my experience, although, my best friend also had an IUD and really liked it. I am an elementary teacher, I rarely drink, never have smoked, exercise/weight lift regularly, and try to eat healthy. I know during those few years it wasn't a lifestyle issue for me, it was a drug issue. I will always tell any woman my IUD experience before they get one.Read More Read Less

36 year old Mom of 6. Zero pain getting it put in. The doctors and nurses were even surprised I didn’t feel anything. Got it put in day 4 of my 7 day cycle 6 weeks post csection. I bled somewhat heavy for an additional week then it tapered off to heavy spotting for 7 days then regular spotting for 3 days now only spot during intercourse. Iv had it a total 3 weeks. I have not had cramping or any other side effect. I follow a healthy life style, exercise daily and eat right. I hardly drink alcohol. I take my prenatals still. Keep in mind A lot of side effects do some from an unhealthy life style. So there are lots of negative reviews but how are those people living? What other issues do they have? Also my sex drive is way up. Overall really glad I didn’t listen to the negative reviews and hope I continue with success Read More Read Less

The Mirena was suggested to me as a way to curb my heavy and irregular menstrual cycle. I was having to get bi-yearly iron infusions as I was losing so much blood and this seemed to be my only option. The insertion: I was one of many who had a horrific time with this. While my uterus does tilt backward, making most things like Pap smears a little uncomfortable, the pain I experienced during this procedure has kept me in anxiety about having it removed. It was so painful that I almost passed out. I’ve had biopsies done before on my uterus that hurt less. I’ve given birth before naturally which hurt less. However, I do understand everyone is different and this was simply my own experience. Results: The mirena absolutely did what I was told it would. My heavy bleeding dissipated and I’m lucky to bleed once or twice a year now. I’ve had the Mirena for two years. The first negative side affect I experienced was hormonal acne. As someone who always had perfectly clear skin, this happened so gradually that at first I didn’t notice until my husband gently pointed it out. By this time, the acne was scarring my skin and no amount of skin therapists or dietary changes would help. I was adamant that I wanted to remove the mirena but was suggested to try roaccutane first - which required effective birth control due to the defects upon falling pregnant while taking the medication. The roaccutane worked with no severe side affects which is great. Something else that happened gradually was weight gain. I’m an active 33 year old who eats well. Nothing in my routine has changed over the past 7 months, yet somehow I have gained 12 kgs.. yet I’m told this has nothing to do with the Mirena. Just like my acne had nothing to do with the Mirena. I’ve had my thyroid tested, the results were fine. I can’t do a hormone panel as the Mirena will mask the results. My doctor ran other blood tests because she agreed what is happening with my body is not normal. I am tired all of the time and I have insomnia and no sex drive. What my blood results did show was I now have hemochromatosis.. which was being masked by my heavy periods pre Mirena. Just a huge array of weird symptoms which I didn’t have beforehand. I put my weight down to my age but even my doctor had said that is not normal for such a small timeframe with no lifestyle differences. She has agreed that it needs to go. I’m excited to say I’m booked it to have the mirena removed. I already feel a huge relief that I’m going to get rid of this and run a hormone panel once my body has levelled out after the removal. I only wish I read more about the side affects before I made the decision to get one. I’ve since read quite a few scientific journals and petitions which are pushing for more research to be done on this device and the adverse reactions women are experiencing. I hope this review helps someone to make an informed decision around their own body. Summary: For me, it did what was described - it stopped my heavy menstrual flow. But the physical and mental cost of doing so was NOT worth it. Not by a long shot. Read More Read Less
