I'm writing this review to set the record straight. First of all, I'm a 20 year old college student who has never had a child before. My doctor and I made the decision to go with Mirena because of complications with the birth control pill OrthoTriCyclen Lo. After reading many negative reviews about Mirena- I was very hesitant to go through with getting it. I was so nervous I delayed getting ...

Very good birth control. I've had it for almost 3 years and I have some pain,I spot it seems with the season change, nothing heavy.A little scared about having it removed although putting it in was not that bad.

I did a ton of research on birth control options, and was really excited abour Mirena. The insertion was slightly uncomfortable, and I had fairly heavy spotting for the first month -- both of which weren't that big a deal. My big complaint: it FELL OUT after 30 days! Pretty expensive birth control for one month (I paid $150 and the insurance company paid $500). My insurance won't cover another one (they only pay for one IUD every five years, somewhat understandable) and there is no guarantee from Mirena or my clinic. Basically I'm SOL. Threw $150 out the window. But I'm not bitter or anything... :-) PLEASE ask your OB about "expulsion" (the IUD falling out) if you're considering Mirena. I've read that anywhere from 2% to 30% (!) of users experience this (source: Internet medical websites).Read More Read Less

I have had the IUD in for almost two years. The first 9 months was okay, there was a lot of spotting, but other than that it was fine. But in the last year I've gained 40 pounds, had trouble sleeping, I've totally lost my sex drive, gotten acne and been having horrible mood swings. The side effects are different for everyone, but I would really encourage anyone thinking about getting Mirena to seriously look into all the possible side effects. On the plus side, I haven't gotten pregnant.

It was simple to use, had it inserted by my doctor in about 10 min. I had pretty intense cramps for a few days afterward. I still do have cramping every once in a while during and after sex, but it is still worth it.

My husband and I have 3 beautiful children and needed a reliable method of birth control without giving up the option of having another later. I am over 35 and did not want the pill again. The procedure took only about 30 minutes and I don't have to think about it for another 5 years.

I opted for the Mirena although I have not had children yet and the insertion was the most painful experience of my life. What should have been a three minute in and out procedure took over thiry minutes and even with topical numbing, it was incredibly painful. However, after a few days, all was back to normal and I've no problems over the past few years. Would recommend to other women, and highly recommend to other women who have already had a child.

Installation was pretty uncomfortable. I'd even venture to say it was painful, but only for a moment. Then I wasn't sure I was going to make it through the first 3 months of having it in, because I bled constantly for that 3 months. HOWEVER, once the bleeding stopped, it has been an absolute dream! I've had it now for almost 2 years and my periods are so light, they're almost non-existent (a plus, in my book!) My severe period cramping and bloating have also almost disappeared! I can't see why anyone would not choose a Mirena!Read More Read Less

The initial spotting is bothersome. Easy to use. Painful to have removed. Deffinitely recommended for anybody that is not ready to be steralized, but wants a long term birth control method that is easy to use.
