I have partial seizures and have tried every medication on the market, all with bad results (until Keppra). Depakote caused me to get a life-threatening case of pancreatitis (so BE CAREFUL!); Lamictal caused bruising and migraines; Topamax & Tegretol didn't work; et cetera. Many of them made me lose/gain weight and lose hair. I thought all hope was lost until they put me on Keppra. I've not lo...

This Drug made me crazy and irritable when in the company of other, when I would not normally act in such a fashion.

My 6 y.o. daughter is taking keppra. The side effects are making her moody, having crying spells when upset and tantrums. She also complains of having bad dreams since the onset of taking meds and seizures. She is in treatment and I am working with keeping her calm. She tends to stressed out easily since taking Keppra. She is a different child from her younger age. I am extra patient with her tantrums but we are thankful that she has not had anymore seizures since increase in meds.

Keppra has worked for me so far, I am on a low dose 250mg twice daily. I started only taking one tablet daily to start in order to give my system a chance to get used to the medication. I am having mild break through seizures, I am now taking the medication twice daily, so far so good. I do experience moodiness with the medication and get angry easier than before. I also voice my dislike when someone mistreats another person. Overall though this medication is better than Topamax regarding cognitive function. Read More Read Less

Horrible, mind altering medicine! I didn't realize how much Keppra effected my thinking until I started verbalizing my thoughts to my husband. What seemed perfectly rational in my mind was terrifying to him. For instance I had been thinking for awhile that hitting my head, on the brick house across the street, until it split open would relieve the pressure. It sounded so rational to me. Scary stuff.

I have had epilepsy for 50 years. I have been on a wide range of medications over the decades. After getting tolerant of previous medicines, I was finally put on Keppra. It is really expensive and unless you have really good insurance, you can not afford it. I was taking Tegretol and Keppra and things seemed to be working. Then suddenly everything changed. We had tried to take me off the Tegretol, but it seemed that it was needed. It wasn't until a really bad accident while driving everything changed. My neurologist figured that the Keppra was not longer working. Lamictal was added in order to get me off of Keppra. The side affects were horrible. A new neurologist recommended that I go see an epileptologist. He has done wonders for me. Got me off the Tegretol first, and I am just now getting off the Keppra. It feels like my life has come back to me. If your neurologist is not listening to you, go see someone else. Some difficult cases, like me need to see a specialist. Lamictal and Depakote are working for me. The Seizures(?) or auroas as of late are kind of like getting zapped by electricity when coming out of it. Grand Mal were what I used to have, but now have changed to these brief seizures described above. Read More Read Less

Take 1000 mg/day and it has controlled my seizure activity. Have had no changes in mood. Once and a while I have piercing head pains but I had this symptom before taking Keppra so it does not reflect the effect of Keppra

I have been on Keppra 750mg. 2x a day for over 10yrs. I have not had any Grand Mal seizures since. The worst side effect is a 50lb. weight gain, but it'not all the Keppra.

The ONLY problem I have with this medication is trying to get refills from my doctor. Left a couple messages Friday afternoon, and no response. He's also the one that is not refilling my Keppra. I know it is dangerous to go without meds, but even my pharmacist cannot help. Already had a partial seizure this morning. Are there any OTC I can take in the meantime? Had a brain tumor op in 12-1994 and another in 12-2013 (ogliodendroglioma). Surgeon couldn't get all of the tumor out.

Seizures were causing significant memory loss for me - both short and long term (last few years). I've now been taking just 250 mg, 3 x daily for the last 9 months. Now, no more seizures and no more memory loss! I'm 69 years old, working full time in a stressful, demanding job and doing very well. Was given trials with other meds but side effects were extremely pronounced and unaccepable to me. Side effects with Keppra have been drowsiness and moodiness at times. Keppra has been a miracle for me.Read More Read Less

My son was prescribed Keppra to treat his Grand Mal seizures. He has had three episodes in a 18 month period and was put on Keppra after the 2nd. His 3rd seizure was probably the result of him not being consistent with taking his medication. The first few weeks on Keppra, he was very tired, but other than that he was fine. After his third seizure, his dosage was increased. We started noticing that he was very quick to get angry and was behaving aggressively towards his younger brothers. When I tried to talk to him about how he was feeling, his answer was "I don't give a damn." He may be a teenager, but that is not a normal phrase or attitude for him. I contacted his doctor and had his morning dosage reduced, with his evening dosage remaining higher. He doesn't seem as angry, but I do think his personality is not quite the same.Read More Read Less

I've been taking this for 5 years at 1.5 grams a day; no more hallucinations or any other symptoms of my partial seizures, unless provoked by high spiking fevers (my largest trigger). My only "side effect" was getting back my thirst-indicator (before I only had one for thirst and hunger). It's not even in the giant side effect list; that being said, I've never had any of the other side effects, not even at first. The 1 gram pill is quite large, but I've gotten used to it after a month: you swallow it while drinking from a bottle of water, which opens up your throat more. Do not drink right before: put the pill in, and start drinking.Read More Read Less

This is an important alert! Do not stop this drug without first talking to your doctor. My mother decided to stop taking Keppra without telling anyone, because of having severe headaches. Within a week she was a completely different person with smptoms of hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, anger, and anxiety. We siblings are shocked at the severity of change in her behavior and are at a loss to know what to do. She refuses to see a neurologist, and is impossible to reason with.

I started on this medicine in 2010 and I am pleased with the results. In the beginning there were a few situations as to how much I would need to control my seizures but 1500mg in the morning and 1500mg in the evening seems to keep the seizures under control.

I have taken this drug for prevention of migraines for about a year. It worked well in the beginning. I take 750 mg twice a day but recently it stopped working as well. It was increased to 1000 mg twice day and my body did not tolerate it. So now I am weaning off of it and trying a new drug. I had no side effects but could definitely tell within a day or two if I had missed a dose.

I have been taking Keppra for 9 years and are a female who was diagnosed with Juvenile Absence Seizures 'with' and 'without' absences, at 13 years diagnosed with Eyelid Myoclonia, at 17 years Tonic Clonic seizures developed, trialled many AEDs and for the last 9 years have been taking Keppra. No more tonic clonic seizures if I regularly take it without missing it. Some partial control with eyelid myoclonia which is usually highly resistant to all meds, although this condition is far worse than the tonic clonic seizures to live with. Side effects experienced with Keppra have been - keppra rage, excessive tiredness / somnolence, co-ordination difficulties when walking, abnormal liver function although may 'not' be related, irritability, aggression, worsening sinusitis, unusual rash on glands of neck which may 'not' be related to the keppra, changes/problems with the skin. If your Neurologist advises you that its a 'relatively safe drug' don't believe it, keppra has many side effects and each person reacts differently to it, some pass, others stay and what else its doing to your body, is anyone's guess. Make sure you research this drug, there is plenty of information online about it, make sure you know what it can or may cause including severe depression, mood and behavioural changes. There may be more to this drug than you or your Neurologist tend to believe. Also report side effects to the manufacturer so they can log it in their system, good luck.Read More Read Less
