With Dexedrine, I am taking a med I self-medicated in the '60s! In 9th grade in '62, I could not stay awake in the AM. My Mom's best friend was a drug salesman and she got Dexamyl for weight. I snitched a few dex 15 mg spansule there and at my corner drugstore job. From teacher and parents, I got the usual "lazy, no motivation". Scorn from father who laughed that I would be lawyer. But on Dex, I w...

DEXTROAMPHETAMINE I have ADD, tried adderall and the XR,the reg. Adderall caused unexplained anger/frustration type symptoms, mood swings, and only worked for about 4 hrs. I then tried the Adderall XR and it worked well for about 6 months which is when my Insurance didn't want to cover it anymore. With no Generic Adderall XR available at the time, I was started on the dexidrine XR. I have had no bad side effects so far(3years) and it works very well for me with the focus, concentration, and motivation issues associated with ADD. My 18yr old daughter that was diagnosed with ADHD about 4 years ago is on the dexadrine, and seems to have issues with misuse by taking more then prescribed(loses effictiveness/build a tolerance), and/or staying up for 2-3 days in a row, not eating, mood swings, etc. Similar experiences with older daughter(23) and son(21), both with ADD and had some similar issues, but with the Adderall. Parents, Please be well informed, educated, and attentive to your children and teens on stimulant medications. In the event that medication is absolutly nessesary for your minor child to be able to function, Please try alternatives that are not amphetamines first such as Stratera or Concerta. Just a suggestion from an experienced mom. Read More Read Less

I am a college student at a top university with ADD. I was only diagnosed a few months ago, but this drug has changed my life! I have more energy and because I can pay attention to my classes, I find everything more interesting and I am having less issues waking up and getting to class. My only warning is that it does cause some sleep issues, and it definitely increases your anxiety level.

I have been on dextroamphetamine and at first I was like it is working but now for the past week I have not been really sleeping at night and I am on a sleeping aid and I also at night I get really hungry and I have gained some of my weight that I have worked so hard to lose back. My mind is still racing a lot and I can not stand it. Called the doctor and the doctor is not in till Tuesday. Something needs to be done. I am so unhappy with this drug. But I have to go with what my insurance will pay for?Read More Read Less

I have been this drug for 26 years. I am 76 now, and with the shortage due to Barr labs error with Adderall, cannot get it for a month. I can try to be focused, and only experience has kept me in it. From my school days til I was 55, when I started, my life was lousy, I was overweight, quick tempered, and blew through 2 marriages, messed up 4 kids who had it,also. My wife saw a program on ADHD, called me in to see it. That was me! I was tested, and tried all the popular drugs until I got Dextrostat. Wow, what a cheange! My wife could tell if I forgot my meds inanhour. I am trying to find a replacement, as Barr says they are having trouble with supplies. The whole shortage is due to the Adderall users getting dextrostst(Now a generic)and staying on it. I was given Adderall, and ended up with headaches and a spike in my BP, almost 190/90. I am experiencing some headaches and increase in BP, but cannot feel any addition withdrawal. I started out with 5 mg/day and have increased it in 3-4 year intervals to the 35 mg I take today. I can tell when it is not working well when I can't sleep. I refuse to take the popular sleep drugs, as the side effects scare me. Come on Barr labs, A/K/A Tela labs from Israel, get busy! I am a 41 year old female with Fibromyalgia. If anyone knows about Fibromyalgia (FMS) it effects many things, health related. I have insomnia, but am extremely exhausted/tired during the day. It has effected my ability to concentrate, memory, and ability to stay on tasks. I refuse to give in and still work, but am finding the most miniminal daily activities are becoming more impossible. I am just too tired. I have a natural high tolerance to medications and currently take Dextroamphetamine 5mg 3tablets 2x daily and still feel exhausted. I am tired of pills that have little effect, but do not like the try this medicine, doesn't work, onto another medicine. It seems it's hopeless unless there is some "super" pill that I am not being told about that will actually work. The exhaustion has effected all areas of my life and I almost feel desperate at times due to being so tired or being tired. I am sure some of you can relate. Read More Read Less

I'm a 41 yr old mom w severe ADD. Due to shortage of Adderall, I too was switched to this(20mg) and it is way more effective. Tho it only lasts 3 to 4 hrs,(10 mg) so I am increasing soon to 30mg a day. My only side effect is I cant get control over my extreme upset tummy. But its worth it for I am now fully able to stay focused and on task. :)

I am 36 and been on and off stimulants for my adhd since I was 19. This seems to be the least bothersome to my co-existing anxiety/mild ocd, pmdd, and depression. The onlty problem is a tummy ache, but I think forcing myself to have some crackers or toast will help. Be advised that this is more potent than adderall,I got it as a sub for adderall b/c there is a shortage and I find that half the dosage of dex is as strong as add but it lasts for 3-4 hrs as compared to 4-8 w/ add-depending on the person/diet/etcRead More Read Less

Rx for over 6 months now. Have had to work a little to adjust dosage. This trial at 10 Mg Sustained Action capsules 4 times a day. I am a Vietnam Era Veteran with a long history of indicated Rx medications combined with a natural high tolerance. I am also well educated and a responsible VA patient. About 6 weeks into this regimen I realized I needed to talk with my prescriber. I was not realizing prescribed bioavailability. (Rx not working as MD intended.) A once a day 10 Mg tablet, not sustained release, prescribed as an intended balancing effort. We found my comfort zone. Now my diagnosed condition is treated and regular medical attention to monitor ongoing progress is documented. Perhaps as with any Rx I do have some issues, one of which gets me a confused look from my regular MD prescriber. With the SA Caps I will sometimes not be able to take them at the same time every day. I have enough experience now to point definitively to this medication. Dextroamphetamine is a CNS stimulant and as such should elevate sensory functions. The SA Caps are designed to have a lesser degree of quick release with a leveling off action. I take them as prescribed and within 40 to 50 minutes I can hardly keep my eyes open. My research shows a similar reaction young people experience with Ritalin. It is "Speed", yet it calms the hyper child down. I have no empirical evidence and have not found anyone who has like experiences. Perhaps this post will help. This medication in no way diminishes my appetite or waistline. MD/patient discussion on this is in accord. While I do get therapeutic value, I am actually well below my own tolerance level. The medication loses the battle big time at the fridge. I do experience expected though very unwanted side effects. Elevated but well monitored BP. Tenderness in male reproductive area. Mild systemic nerve parasthesia if I forget to dose and I do. No overwhelming desire to mow the lawn at 4 am. My grade for my diagnosis, 90. Read More Read Less

i havent been on any other treatment but i found that when we got the dosage figured out i really do love it. i dont have any side effects besides loss of appetite, but i still eat so that hasnt been a problem. i love how it has helped me focus and i can finally complete tasks without having to mentally tell myself to focus every five minutes. it does keep me awake on occasion but i just remedy that with a mild sleep aid and i have not problems. i dont take it on the weekends and the difference is very noticeable but im not "out of it" when im on it, im still my bubbly self, i just get my work and school work done! as im getting into the hard stuff in the RN program i am so thankful for the medication and the positive aspects! I have been on and off this medicine for almost a year. It all started off alright, yes I had stomache aches and minor side effects at the beginning, but it started to get better. Within these last couple of months, I have been having nothing but problems. If you have heart problems, don't use this medicine. I lost 30 pounds in only a couple months, I am always sick, my sleep schedule is all over the place, I have mood swings, I'm not as social as I used to be, I get in like zombie moods. Im always dehydrated, shaking, sweating, dizzy. I have also shrunk almost 2 inches. This medicine does effect weight and growth. My doctor thinks taking breaks with the medicine for periods of time is helping, but it is really only making things worst. I have to admit, it does help me focas, and it does what it is supposed to, but there are just too many side effects and precautions.Read More Read Less

I am prescribed this medication for Depression. After a serious suicide attempy & 10 years of counseling & trying many meds for depression, this med brought me out of darkness. For the past 2 years I have taken this med with a VAST improvement in my mental health. I now have hobbies & am involved in group activities.
