This is the first month for this drug. Before I was able to purchase generic colchicine. I do NOT understand why a generic drug has become a brand name -- especially as it is a very old drug used for gout for centuries. Can anyone shed light?

colcrys is a brand name that has an artificially high price owing to government (FDA) decision to give one company an exclusive market for something that has been used since the time of Christ. (Ben Franklin brought the Autumn crocus (natural source)to America.) So government control raised the price from 3 cents to five dollar a dose! The simple solution is to buy from Canada. Oden labs there makes colchicine tablets.

To anyone who has used this medicine and found it not to work the same as the old colchicine I was able to get the generic form, which is also ALOT cheaper, from a canadian pharmacy. The new Colcrys was not working for my husband like the old medicine and his doctor faxed in a prescription to a canadian pharmacy and they were able to get us the old generic form of colchicine. My husband just took it the other day and said it helped like the old medicine. I don't know what's in the colcrys medicine but it is ineffective-it can't be the same stuff. If you find its not working for you try ordering it from Canada.Read More Read Less

While it appears to work sometimes it is not always effective at fighting off a gout attack. My experience is about 65% effective at stopping a gout attack within 24 hours.

Colcrys was prescribed for a 1st occurence of gout. I waas given a 30 day supply. I managed to take it for 15 days. It was not effective. I had diarhea, nausea, acid reflux, and cramps. An altogether unpleasant experience. Stopped meds, called doctor and have a follow up appt.

My husband has suffered with gout for about 20 years. He has been taking probenecid with colchicine for most of that time with good results. He used to take the old colchicine (before colcrys) when he would feel like he was getting a full blown attack either becuase he over indulged or forget to take his daily pill. The old colchicine always worked for him and knocked it out. This new "colcrys" does not work at all for him. It can't be the same medicine becuase the older version ALWAYS helped him alot. If you find that this medicine dosent work for you like it did in the past-you're not alone! My husband noticed right away that it wasn't working like the old colchicine he used to take. It is a total rip off as well. I used to get the old medicine for around 30.00-now it's 175.00 and it doesnt even work. Someone should investigate this because even though they say it's the same medication it can't be-Read More Read Less

I have been taking the real colchicine for about ten years when I have a gout attack. This stuff act differently in that it does not reverse the effects that have already started It does stop the progression of the swelling. The old cochicine that I was taking would eliminate the problem. After taking just one of these pills I become nausiated. I don't get diahrea until about the third day and then the gout is still there. Something is wrong with this drug. Possibly the manufacturer changed the drug so we would consume more for the same results as the old stuff. Read More Read Less

I'm a 54 year old very fit and athletic Asian woman who was diagnosed with gout from hydrochlorothiazide treatment and dehydration. I've been on Colcrys for 2 days and having severe diarrhea, up to the point where I have to miss work. It reduced the swelling but my toe is still red and inflamed. It also makes my cheeks full and red and I have severe nausea. I take it with lots of water and stay home. Gout is debilitating; I don't know how long I can tolerate it..

Frustrated that the drug maker can profitably sell this pill for $5 for 100 tablets, but now sells it for $5 a tablet now that they have an FDA patent. Insurance wouldn't cover the Colcrys prescription, so I ordered generic colchicine from a reputable mail-order Canadian pharmacy. Unlike the US, you can still get the generic from Canada. $59 for 100 of the .6mg pills. Anyways, the medication works great for treating the gout, but diarrhea kicked in about 24 hours after starting the colchicine and it's been miserable. Bad enough that I'm discontinuing the medication after just a couple days.Read More Read Less

Severe stomach pain, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite. Im currently taking it for pleurisy and pericarditis probs. But I'd rather suffer from the inflammation than the side effects of this mess of a pill....

Overall I this drug does what it is advertised to do, prevent gout flair ups. For the first couple of weeks taking Colcrys, I had loose stools however after my body adjusted to he medication it has worked well. My only complaint is mild tiredness and loss of muscle strength however these side affects are much more tolerable than the pain of gout.

After two full days on this medication the gout attack that started nearly two weeks ago has gotten worse, particularly the swelling. And it is far too expensive!

I've started to have gout episodes in my foot since I lost one kidney and my Uric Acid is always elevated. My primary doctor advised to start taking Colcrys and the first two days I could tolerate the drug well. By the third day, I had severe diarrhea, mild stomach cramping and felt nauseated the entire day. My foot doctor informed me to only take it twice a day and with meals and that helped. But after I finish this prescription out, I am going to look for other ways to control my uric acid buildups even I have to become a vegetarian!!!Read More Read Less

I was given this medication for treatment of fluid build up from pericarditis. It worked wonders until a couple of weeks ago when I experienced 2 complex partial seizures. I was taken off this medication and the seizures have ceased.

I have kidney disease already so I was a little nervous to take this med. I reluctantly decided to take it when my gout in my left foot got really really bad. I was taking it for 5 days and experienced bad diarrhea and was throwing up almost everything I ate/drank. The gout is not completely gone but I can walk without assistance. I still have some pain in my foot and toes and stand on it very long. I also start experiencing pain in my right hip which I'm not sure if it came from the colcrys but it started when I got on this pill. Read More Read Less

I took this medication before and had no problems and no side effects. This time was different. Two days after taking it I begin to experience severe diarrhea and cramps. I am off the medications now, but an still have cramps with occasional diarrhea.
