I was prescribed this med to help with racing thoughts and it has worked wonders. It has controlled the thoughts and I do not drink nor crave alcohol at all. It is a miracle drug and it is a great weight management pill to boot. Two thumbs up!

After taking Topamax for the first time, it made me feel extremely strange. I got a tingly feeling in my entire head, it gave me a headache, and my whole body felt extremely fatigued. I felt more spaced out than usual, too. It was terrible so I called my doctor that day. He said "You need to try to push through the side effects, they'll subside after a few days." Well, let me tell you, they did no...

My memory has always been bad but my sister in law called when she was having her baby and told me she was in the hospital. She had complications and for me to tell my mom. That was serious right? One would think that I would remember that right? No. It left me. My mom came and left. Then my grand mother came and we got to talking. She said something and it clicked. I about had a cow and I ran and called my mom right then and there. I blame the Topamax for that as well as my thinking of something and then in the next breath forgetting it completely. Boy that makes me feel like an air head. I also blame it for my stuttering and loss of thought in the middle of a sentance but I would rather have all of that then the blinding pain, nausa, being in a bed in a completely soundless dark bed room because everything hurts me missing out on not only my life but my little girls once more. I may still have headaches but those I can deal with easily. Those I laugh at and take IB's or Advil for and go on living. Topamax keeps the migraines at bay and me functioning in every day life and for that I can put up with the side effects.Read More Read Less

I experienced horrible side effects with confusion, memory loss, abdominal pain, back pain, speech impairment, nausea and reflux. I became so confused and unsteady, I could not drive or even make dinner. The side effects were intolerable for me. I took it for eight (8) weeks. No relief.

My doctor prescribed Topamax for migraine prevention. During the 1st week, I thought that there was a possibility this drug would help me. However, in the 2nd week as I increased the dosage as prescribed, I began to have difficulty finding the right words to say what I intended. I even asked my doctor if the drug could have the side effect of making me more stupid than usual. As I progressed to the 3rd week, my behavior changes were noticeable to others, and I became irritable and agitated and felt out of control. After a difficult weekend, I saw my doctor on Monday morning and begged her to help me get off of this drug. She said that although I could probably just discontinue it, it would be best to gradually step down over the course of about a week due to the risk of seizure. I realize that possibly some of these side effects might have subsided, but I just wasn't willing to take the risk. My doctor says that some in her field call the drug "topa-can't". I certainly experienced that. There is a possibility that the steps up in dosage weren't right for me, but I am scared to try this drug again. I will continue with my Imitrex and alternative treatments.Read More Read Less

topax is one of 4 seizure med.s I'm on. I still have multiple partial seizures daily, and I fall only perhaps 4 or 5 times a yr.(an improvement on falling) I think topamax is degrading my memory, because now I lose stuff that was "on the tip of my tongue" more than I ever did

A migraine prevention wonder drug. It has changed my life! I only take 25 mg two times a day, below what is recommended because that's what works for me. Maybe that's why I have not had the side effects so many others have experienced. No one HAS to take 100 mg a day if less works for them. Don't be afraid to try a lesser dosage because it really can make a huge difference in your quality of life. I have taken it over a year and have had three bad headaches in that time compared to two a month without it. Hurray!Read More Read Less

I've taken Topamax for almost a year, and I've only had 2 really bad headaches. When I feel a headache coming on, I take a midrin and it goes away. With Topamax and Midrin, I have finally been pretty much headache free. I haven't felt this good in over 5 years! The side effects haven't been that bad. And I've lost weight (bonus). I would recommend this. I'm on 100mg a day, and to me, it's easy to remember.

I have tried many other preventatives over the years before topamax. Topamax is the most effective for me. I still get about one or two headaches a month requiring an imitrex injection and sometimes bed for a day or two. Before Topamax, on Inderol for example, I had some degree of headache each and every day. I didn't even know to be honest what it felt like to be headache or pressure free in the head most days. To me, it has been a great relief. I am on 50 mg. BID which isn't that large a dose really. Hope, this helps.Read More Read Less

The side effects of this medication were horrible! I read it may causse "confusion" and inattention, but this was unreal. I was beginning to wonder if I'd had a stroke. I struggled to comprehend oral language and find words. My thoughts went through my head and out my mouth. Leaving me with the personality of a person who had been drinking without the slurred words. I did get one headache on this medicine and I didn't have another medicine to treat the migraine, which was really miserable. If you experience any side effects I wouldn't wait to discontinue this medication asap.Read More Read Less

The medication prevented almost all of my migraines for two years. Prior to this medication, I got migraines every day for 15 years. This is a wonderful treatment option and worth looking into.

I take other medications due to chronic pain and Topamaz caused me to sleep constantly and act like a complete zombie. I couldn't hold conversations, couldn't stay awake for meals and had no desire to do anything, and I have an exceptionally srong tolerance for benzodiazapines. It did help my migraines but for very short periods and with adverse reaction. Good luck to anyone out there.

Before I began taking Topamax, I suffered with migraines almost daily. It took about 5 years and 4 doctors later before I found something that worked for me. Lucky for me, at the time, my current doctor was up to date on all of the latest treatments for chronic migraine sufferers. She had begun to treat me with Topamax even before it had been advertised as a treatment for migraine. I now take 2 100mg tabs of Topamax daily along with Nortriptyline at night. My headaches have decreased dramatically. Read More Read Less

I have been on Topamax for 6-1/2 years. It works very well to help control my chronic daily migraines. A great many of the initial side effects have gone, but I am still left with word finding issues, as well as memory problems and some short temper problems. I did have depression problems, but went on Wellbutrin and that straightened me out. I do not intend to go off of Topamax any time soon.

Topamax was prescribed to go with the existing anti-depression therapy of Prozac. I have been on 75 mg. at bedtime for about 18 months at a cost of up to $200/month. I have no health insurance to help defray the cost. The medication has been ineffective, easy to use, and I am unsatisfied with my expeience. I have none of the usual problems for which Topamax is prescribed, i.e., epilepsy or migraine headaches or chronic pain of any kind. I have no reason to believe it helped the depression at all. Still had suicidal thoughts and extremely black times. However there were side effects I did not recognize until recently when my mental health improved and I began to research the drug on line. Topamax has blurred my vision, given me concerns about my mental acuity, constipated me, and with the Prozac, made me sleep at odd times. Because of the existing depression, I attributed most of the subtle side effects to age or genetics, and never considered the drug. The prescribing doctor never inquired, but seemed more interested in my weight loss, a side effect that would have been nice but not a primary reason for prescribing the drug. Recently, the situation that caused most of the depression resolved itself, and my mental state has improved drastically over the past three months. I am in the process of weaning myself off of this drug and firing the doctor.Read More Read Less

My first 1 1/2 yrs on Topamax were good, but as time went by I had to keep increasing the dosage. Although I saw a marked decrease in migraines, I lost more that 20 lbs, and had memory issues, but it wasn't until the heart palpatations began that my troubles really began.I now live with constant PVC's, have undergone countless tests and after two years off the drug the PVC's continue, I am sure others will disagree, but I do not think the life changing side effects are worth the results...

It helped me with my migraines but I had severe swelling in legs and feet, several periods of crying w/times of ready to leave my family, not able to concentrate or able to think of everyday normal words to use. I was only on this medication for no more than 5-6 days and even now which is 2 wks later I am still battling the severe swelling in my legs and feet. I took myself off this asap.

At first, this seemed like the best thing ever, even with the side effects of dizziness, confusion, and weight loss. After 18 months, energy was still sooooo low, and weight went back on (and then some). Am looking into the possibility that it caused thyroid issues since I now diet and exercise and keep gaining weight. Decreased migraine frequency moderately, but I chose to cease medication.

I take Topamax for control of Migraines. I did have problems with the quivering in my eyes, but once I got on the right dose, it got better. I still can not drink and pop/soda as it tastes terrible/flat. My Migraines are 80% better. I swear by this med now. I was getting Migraines at least 5 times a week, now 3 times a month.
