After trying 4 other drugs for depression, I finally got on this; and it works great! Depression has subsided, and I sleep much better and rise without a "hangover" feeling. No side effects that I can tell.

Mirtazapine is the medication l hate to love. Depression, anxiety and panic attacks have been a part of my life since l was born. I've been given every old and new medication out there. I am a medical professional so l advocate for myself and have no problem letting some providers know they need to listen to their patients when they say something isn't working. After wasting 5 years with a psychiatrist who only prescribed medication, telling me l was bipolar and the swab test results showed l was able to tolerate the meds he was giving me. Turns out l'm not bipolar and the new psychotic drugs he put me on didn't work. After finally parting ways l went to see my new military provider who told me he knew of the psychiatrist l was seeing from his other many patients. My provider wanted me to try Mirtazapine to help with sleep since my circadian rhythm was off. This medication has been my go to for sleep and it helps with depression, etc. The side effects for me are dry mouth and weight gain. The weight gain is why l hate to love it. ?? But, l have Hypothyroidism which doesn't help with the weight. I would tell you if you are taking this medication of course you're going to have some side effects as you are introducing something to your body and brain. If the first night you take it and you sleep for 12 hours it could be your body and mind needed the rest. Bringing groggy the next day is also common as the effects of Mirtazapine last through the next day. I was off for a while and just started back up at 15 mg and will go down to 7.5 mg in another week. The other treatment l've started is TMS magnetic stimulation that has been a game changer. It wakes up the part of your brain which is affected causing depression. Most insurances cover the treatments. TMS has worked well with the Mirtazapine. As for the weight gain stay a way from nocturnal eating and carbs. There are so many different equations that go into how any medication ?? will work from one person to another. Since Mirtazapine is a serotonin uptake drug as your provider to check your levels through a blood test. If your serotonin levels are fine it could be low dopamine which would require a different medication. Now there are the new weight loss meds that work wonders. I hope this info will help you. Best of luck. Read More Read Less

If I take a whole tablet I can sleep for over 10 hours easily. The only downside is they make my groggy and aggy as anything the next day

I have PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, and depression. After being on an SSRI and with recurring PTSD a new doc started sertraline which made me very dizzy. He decided to start Remeron. The first 2 days I had a great night sleep of about 12-13 hours. Today I woke up at 5 pm shocked I had lost a full day totally out cold. I ate half a loaf of banana bread bc I was starved having not eaten for a day. I calculated I was asleep 17 hours. The doctor knew I have responsibilities one of which is I’m moving in a week and could not afford to be sedated. Aside from losing a whole day, being disoriented, I’m extremely dizzy and very upset this happened. Luckily I’ve only been on it less than a week but I’m stopping it immediately and weaning back on my SSRI and looking for a new doctor. I guess I now know what it’s like to be dead… totally out and without knowledge of time passing… it’s a cruel and unusual drug. Take it with the warning it will knock you out and make you extremely hungry with no positive action in my case. Read More Read Less

It took a while to get used to it. Was very jittery starting it at 30mg (paired with sertraline at 50mg) but I’m on 45mg a day (still with 50mg sertraline) and I feel alright. Take it at night to help you sleep! It works wonders for sleep :)

Was on this for depression, but all it was good for was weight gain and a good night sleep. Did nothing to improve my mental wellbeing. Stopped taking after 6mnths with no withdrawal symptoms at all. Seems to me its just a sleeping tablet.

It took me 5 months to take this tablet due to all the reviews, I really did not want to take it but I got to the point where I hadnt left the house for 6 weeks due to insomnia, exhaustion and anxiety, my mood was low to all this too. The doctor told me take 15mg to start and the up the dose to 30mg if you need to. To me, where I was so wary about taking it, I thought I would take half the tablet, this knocked me out for the whole weekend. I mean I was the calmest I had been in a long time but I was too sedated. So after night two of trying the 7.5mg I thought I would try cutting that in half, so 3.75mg, this seemed to work much better for me, I dont take it past. 7.30 in the eve to be able to wake up completely fine in the morning, I am getting about 9 hours sleep which I have mot had in years. This is helping with my overall mood. My anxiety has definitely eased, but I have to say it got slightly worse for the second week I told it, which I know is normal with anti d’s but it was nothing I could not handle with a bit of CBD for a few days. Im a month in now, staying on the 3.75gm and I have noticed an improvement in everything. I even managed to drive to a friend today which I had not been able to do in a long while. My advise would be the doctors insisted I take the 15gm and up to that now, but you have to do what feels right for you, and right now a quarter of a pill is right for me. Hope this helps…Read More Read Less

This med is not for me. The doctor prescribed it to help me relax and sleep. The first dose of 30mg at bedtime put me out in 20 mins after taking it, and I was out cold for 12 hours, then I spent the next 24-36 hours in a severe dizziness/ stupor/ zombie-like state. I’ll say that the effects lasted over 48 hours. After Reading the side effects I noticed that severe dizziness is listed, but I can’t handle being a zombie for 2 days.

My mother (57) suffered major depression,a few years before she had been admitted into a mental health unit but did recover in that instance. She was seeing 2 psychiatrists & was prescribed Avanza,I lived local to her & every day my step father would ring me to go around because she wouldn't get out of bed.I feel guilty because I would encourage her to take them even though she told me she didn't like the way they made her feel.A few days later she tried to take her own life & was airlifted to hospital where she was put on life support, the following day we had to make the painful decision to turn the machines off after being told there was no possible way she was going to survive (2004).Her death hit me hard & I (37 at the time)was sent to see a psychiatrist also who prescribed me Avanza too. This medication scared me,I was suicidal while I was on it & it was only then that I understood why she didn't want to take it.I stood on my balcony & if it hadn't been for my partner at the time grabbing me & dragging me inside,I would have jumped. This medication is dangerous & those prescribing it need to understand how damaging the side effects are for some people.I have had others tell me they have had the same suicidal thoughts on this medication.Read More Read Less

Mirtazapine prescribed to me for anxiety and insomnia- to be honest the bad side effects outweighed the benefits - I gained 10 kg am know treating high blood pressure all because of this drug. It is advised as a appatite enhancer. On a scale of 1 to 10 mirtazapine you wrecked my health for the sake of a good sleep

I was really happy with this medicine. It made it super easy to get to sleep and stay asleep. However after six years I started having unrelated issues and the meds ability to give me an insatiable appetite made it hard for me to manage my other issues. I had to stop taking and the withdrawal has been pretty intense. Be careful with Remeron, it has helped me tremendously but the side effects caused me to stop using it and I was not prepared for those side effects when I no longer took the medicine. I started using mirtazapine because I stopped eating and sleeping for two weeks and it fixed me instantly I felt 1000 times better. I got my appetite back and I could fall asleep instantly honestly no downsides during the first year. I have no anxiety at all. But now I’m gaining a lot of weight so I’m going to try lexapro as well if anyone has any advice let me know!

My primary care doctor took me off Zolpidem for my severe insomnia, after 10+ years. He prescribed Mirtazapine - to help with my insomnia - as well as my anxiety/depression. At 7.5 mg, he was confident that the weight gain, increased appetite & hunger pangs side effects would be minimal. I started the drug on 6/1/23 & at my steady weight of 125 lbs. Within a week, with no change in my eating habits, I gained at least 5 - 10 lbs & felt constantly hungry. It distracted me from my work, kept me up all night (thus defeating the purpose of better sleep) and the weight gain was rapid. The change in my body type/shape was glaring. I reached out to my Primary Care doctor on 7/20/23 & described all of the above, told him I could no longer take it, and my options were for me to choose an OTC alternative or for him to prescribe something else. As I take 2 other meds for anxiety/depression, my main focus was insomnia. He prescribed Ramelteon yesterday (which is also what my older brother had suggested). For the reasons I state above, stay away from Mirtazapine if you can, and seek out something else.Read More Read Less

I have been on 7.5 mg Mirtazapine about year with good results. Lately I am having more anxiety after being sick several times and not being able to eat and losing weight. The prescription was written originally for 15 mg but we cut it half. Now I’m going back and to take 15 as written. Hopefully there will be no problem.. I failed to mention that I’m elderly. Hope this will help me.

I was prescribed this as an adjunct tx in addition to Cymbalta and ropinorole, with very good results, following suicidal ideation after my son's death. I am still grieving, but in a much better place mentally.

I began taking Remeron an combination with Celexa for anxiety. Taking the Remeron at night took the edge off the Celexa speedy feeling. After a year I stopped taking the Celexa and took only small 5mg dose of Remeron at night. Now many years later I take the small dose of Remeron a couple times a week. It keeps the excessive anxiety away and is a great sleep aid. I am told that Remeron has the interesting property that at smaller doses it causes more drowsiness. I once gave my 25 year old son 5mg and he just about slept continually for 3 days.Read More Read Less
