i have been taking depo for 9 months and i absolutley want to get off of it. i have had tremendous hair loss, tiredness,constant spotting, my breast have shrunk,and i have no intrest in sex. and to top it all off now it causes bone loss! i dont recomend this drug to anyone and im looking for another birth control next doctor visit!

First shot went fine, second was a nightmare that hasn't stopped. Caused all highlights in my hair to go away very suddenly, like a switch was turned off. For 12 years it looks mud-brown!(used to be med. brown with lots of red highlights!) I have two choises, have people stare a me because I look like a freek, or spend hundreds of dollars a year to color all my hair with harsh chemicals that can cause who knows what over the long term for the rest of my life!! i've been on this shot now for 5 years,and recently i have decided not to take it anymore! it caused alot of kidney infections for me! i do not reccomened this to anyone!

After having my first child at the age of 20,I started recieving the Depo, 2 years later my husband and I decided to have another child it took a year and a half to get pregnant, then once again after my second child I went back to the Depo. It was easy and I loved not having a period. My youngest child is now 7 yrs old and in the last year I have gained 30 pounds and can't seem to loose any of it. Just 6 months ago at a scheduled appt did my doctor suggest a bone denisity test. I was not aware of the severeity of prolonged use. I have not had the BMD yet but at the age of 31 and combined of 9 yrs on the Depo I am a bit concerned. Read More Read Less

I took the shot once, and after the three months I had my period/cramps for a whole month, gained 10 lbs, and got huge zits. I didn't get pregnant though, but my symptoms made me worry that I was since I have never been irregular before the shot. Weight gain+zits+constant worry=not recommended, not to mention all the bone density depletion.....isn't BD already a problem in women, why would they give us something to make it worse?

I have been on Depo for over ten years. I just had a BMD test and I am borderline Osteopenia. Hopefully we can stop osteoporosis before it develops. Please read your leaflets and stay on top of your medical care.

Although an incredibly effective birthcontrol, it definitely poses some long term health risks. Request a bone density screening if you started taking this drug in your teens- even if your doctor doesn't think it's necessary.

I took Depo for about 4 years (my late teens) and I was completely satisfied w/ it at that time. At age 21 a doctor requested I get a Bone Density Scan when she discovered I had at one time been on Depo. I am now 22 years old with osteoporosis in several areas of my body due to using this form of birth control during my teenage years. Parents, I wouldn't advise putting your daughters on this birth control. Anyone else considering using it should read as much about the side effects as possible before making a decision. I haven't had a period and only spotted once. No pregnancy while I was on it, so it is effective. I liked only having to get it once every three months, but I did experience a lot of weight gain.

the 1st time was great:no periods ever, no side effects. But it took over a year to get pregnant when I stopped using it. The 2nd time around I have no period for 2 months then I spot a whole month! But it's so easy and so effective for birth control.

I have used the shot for 7 years and have had none of the side effect except maybe a few hot flashes when it's time for the next one. I just recently has a bone density scan that came back great. Evey drug has a side effect and people use then to their advantage.

Although I never got pregnant while on this birth control, after my second shot I started getting my period twice a month. I also had to work out like crazy to not gain any weight. The only thing that was good about it was that I didn't have to take a pill everyday. Also, my skin was really bad when I was on this, I had major breakouts.

I have heard about girls gaining a lot of weight on this but it didnt do so for me. It is a great method for me due to the fact that you only have to worry about getting the shot every 3 monthes! Plus I havnt had my period for a year. It's great!

If I knew about all these side effects I would have NEVER taken it to begin with! I gain 75lbs on this! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS!
