I have been on Depo for over ten years. I just had a BMD test and I am borderline Osteopenia. Hopefully we can stop osteoporosis before it develops. Please read your leaflets and stay on top of your medical care.

I would not recommend this shot to anyone. I started the depo shot because I had heavy, painful periods.I'm only 19,so onlky geting my period every 3 months sounded awsome. I was so wrong...I only had 2 injections. I spot all the time. I've only had one normal period. I get all the symptoms of my period but never get it. I've been off the injection for 2 months, and learned it can take up to 18 months to get pregnant. The side effects like mood swings, and others is not worth it!! Plus what made it worse was when I went to my doctors to start the shot, they just came in the room and gave it to me, never explained any of the side effects. So make sure you research this medication before you get on it. make sure its worth it. I dont think it is!!Read More Read Less

Dr thought the Depo shot was a good choice to treat painful ovulation. Had first and last injection almost 2 months ago, total NUTZOID. Seems I am suffering from MS every single day for almost 2 months. No physical problems, but constant mood swings, anger, anxiety and so on. Not a good choice for me, after reading other posted comments, am very sorry I tried it. I want my life back, can deal with the 7 to 10 days of pain every month.

Depo works! it does exactly what i wanted it to at age 18, stop my period and keep me from getting pregnant. about 5 yrs ago, after being depressed for at least 6 months, i decided not to go back on it. i have had nothing but trouble since. first, i started missing my period for months on end. it would be almost 6 months before i would have a period. this makes it really hard when you are thinking about having children. my husband and i have now been married for 2 yrs and we really want a child. i have not had a period since dec 06 and it's now almost sept 08. i have never been on any other kind of birth control, and i have been tested for polycistic ovarian syndrome, but all test came back negative. my best friend, who i actually talked into getting the shot with me, has had the same problem, except she was diagnosed with POS. i have all the symtoms of having my period each month, the cramps, some swelling, mood change, but nothing. it's like my body doesn't think it should bleed or something. they said that it could take up to 5 yrs to get pregnant, but i guess your just taking a big risk. as far as weight gain, i have been on the heavy side and i would say gained over 50 bls while on it. make sure to look into everything and really think out it. it's not natural to not have a period, there's a reason besides breeding purposes for it.Read More Read Less

I had the shot 10 years ago and it worked fine for me, no periords, no weight gain and no babies. I was on the shot for about 2 years then. Since then I was on and off birth control. I recently decided to get the shot again. I got the shot on July 1, 2008 and I didn't have a period or any spotting until July 31, 2008. Today is Aug. 11, 2008 and I am still bleeding and the cramps are getting on my nerves. I called my doc and the nurse said that's one of the side effects. How long is this going to last? I am not going to get this shot when it is time to get it again. I think I am not going to get anything just stick with condoms and spermicides. This bleeding is driving me crazy. What is the longest anyone had this bleeding while on the shot?Read More Read Less

Nothing but problems. Had the shot three times, caused me to have bone pain, hair loss, went from 110 lbs to 130 lbs, bad mood swings and head aches.SO bad caused me several trips to the ER.It has been seven months since last injection and still have the same problems, but I am lucky to loose the extra lbs. and be back to my old weight.I can't understand why my periods have never returned. My body acts like it's going to have a period but nothing happens. My Dr. keeps pushing this shot on me even though she knows what it did to me.If I knew this would have happened to me I would have never had the injections.Read More Read Less

I've been on the shot for over 4 years. I just had my second bone scan done and I am borderline for bone loss. I haven't had a period in 4 years and I love it. I gained over 100 pounds being on it over the course of that time. However, I also went through a nasty depression stage where I did nothing but drink soda. So I blame some of my weight gain on that. But I love not having a period and not having to take an additional pill everyday. Or having to watch the calendar and make sure I am prepared, scheduling time off of work for the severity of the period, etc. Read More Read Less

I am 41 years old and I have 3 children and do not plan to have anymore.....After the birth of my daughter in 97, everything started going down hill and has not stopped. I had a (tubal-ligation) in 01 and regret that even worse. More problems than reliefs. Now they recommend doing a (thermal-ablation) which I am all for to ease up on the bad periods, but I was given this injection 5 weeks ago to some how prepare for this procedure and now I feel worse than I did before. The mood swings are horrible and as for the PERIODS!!!3 weeks of heavy bleeding for no good reason is enough. I feel exhausted all the time and don't feel like doing anything or dealing with anyone. As for sex? Who needs it....All he does is whine because of the constant period or (bleeding). You are not able to satisty anyone if you are not able to satisfy yourself, and feeling this way makes it impossible. The only good advantage I see for being born a girl is that you are able to give birth and love and nurture your children. But, the disadvantage is having to go through all these discomforts and problems. And as you get older, you are expected to just deal with them. Well, it's harder that one might think.I already deal with depression daily, but it would be nice for the care giver to advise you of all the side effects before concenting to treatment. I don't consider this treatment, it's more like adding salt to an open wound.Read More Read Less

The warning available now for bone loss were not available to me when I took this drug. I was only on it for 9 months (3 shots)....that was over 8 years ago. I will live the rest of my life in constant pain because of this drug. The damage done to my bones and joints will never go away and has never been fully recognized by my doctors. Thank you WebMD for posting these warnings so others will not suffer the way I have.

I have been on the depo shot for almost 6 years for my endometriosis. In the first year, I did have spotting, bad mood swings, and I even gained some weight. on the other hand, i no longer have chronic pelvic pain, nor bleed for 6 months straight. i don't reccommend this shot for someone who just doesnt want a period. And please, take your Calcium if you are on it.

I am not satisfied with depo at all!! Please before you start this click on drugs and treatments and type in depo-provera and read everything you can get your hands on!! It works, but every time I have sex the day after my period starts. I have been getting horrible cramps and migraines. I got on depo shot being told it will my my periods shorter if I have a period at all. Well after I got my first shot it was all good I just had a two week period every 2 monthes. Then it got worse every time I have sex the day after I have sex, even after not having a period for a week my period starts right back up!! plus I just found out that FDA has put a black label warning on this shot, is the worse warning they can put on it!! If I would know what I know now before I got that first shot I would not of started this shot!!! Read More Read Less

This was, in fact, the worst experience of my whole life-I'd rather be pregnant all over again!! I bled for 7 weeks straight, a nasty brown color nonstop! I was tired, lacked interest in sex, and my long hair was starting to fall out. I had the shot only once and will NEVER take it again...even my fiancee asked that I stop using it. Nonstop bleeding PLUS lack of interest in sex = not recommended for anybody in a relationship. It's been sixteen days since I was supposed to return to the doc for the second shot, I refuse to go but feel so sick to my stomach!! WORST EXPERIECE ALL AROUND!!Read More Read Less

I loved Depo when I originally started using it. I had horrible periods that would make me miss school. With Depo my periods stopped but mood swings were worse, weight gain everytime I received the shot.I would loose some of the weight, but after my next shot it would be back. It worked really well but now I regret being on it for so long. It caused problem with my triglycerides and a few other areas. When I came off my first period was 27 days long, the next 18 and the next 14days. There is something not totally right about not having a period for over two years. Wasn't worth it.Read More Read Less

I have severe endometriosis and was thrilled when I received my first injection and my painful period ended. However, since beginning this medication I am having severe mood swings, my husband thinks I have gone crazy. My appetite has increased to the point where I feel like I am starving within a few hours of eating, and I am also experiencing severe insomnia. I just heard of the minor side effects, but never expected how extreme they could be. My choice is this, go off of it and continue with excruciating periods, have a complete hysterectomy at 33 years of age, or continue with the injections and hope the side effects diminish over time. I just do not know what to do, as any other of the methods the doctor and I have discussed could affect my seizure disorder.Read More Read Less

I went on the shot because I had excruciatingly painful periods, and it would aggravate my panic disorder about a week before my cycle started. The first shot was great--my period was only 8 hours long! Then about a month later I started bleeding every day and it lasted several weeks but eventually stopped. I've been on it for over a year now and over all am glad I started getting the shots. The only side effect I have are headaches, that seem to alternate over each eyebrow every time. But there are worse things in life than having a headache, such as being nervous all the time! I do have some very light spotting here and there, but it only lasts about a day. So far, I haven't noticed any significant weight gain.Read More Read Less

I have been off and on Depo (depending on if I had insurance) for 10 years. I got pregnant while on the pill, and was able to be on Depo when breastfeeding. I nursed until my son was about 9 mo. old. I love not having a period, as mine make me almost anemic, and are extremely painful. I have gained weight, but can't say it is due to Depo, as I am a heavier person anyway. I am now 32, and just love this shot. I still have SOME symptoms during the beginning of the month, when I would normally have a period, but never spotting. Whenever I go back on the shot after being off for a bit, that period is the last one I have. I still get a bit cranky, and end up feeling like I'm always hungry, but it's only for a day or 2. I would rather deal with that than extremely heavy periods and extreme pain!Read More Read Less
