I have been on Depo for over ten years. I just had a BMD test and I am borderline Osteopenia. Hopefully we can stop osteoporosis before it develops. Please read your leaflets and stay on top of your medical care.

If I knew about all these side effects I would have NEVER taken it to begin with! I gain 75lbs on this! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS!

I had my son at the Age of 21 and was not sexually active before then, so I had no need to take birth control. My periods were so regular that the day after I missed it I knew I was pregnant and low and behold I was. Before having my son, I weighed 165, I gained 30 while pregnant and lost 10 after given birth. I began taking tis shot the say I left the hospital and was dissatisfied the complete time while on this medication. I bled continuously while taking the shot and have not been on it for 9 months and am still bleeding to this day. I attempted to get help from my OB\GYN abs was told that everything was fine it was normal. I have been unable to lose weight successfully and am constantly paranoid about wheter or not I am going to be bleeding for the day. I do not recommend this method for someone who plans on having children anytime. Read More Read Less

I have had horrible, unpredictable mood swings with the Depo shot, primarily mod to major depression, but also anxiety, edginess, anger, and occasionally silliness. I have also had some night sweats- which may not be due to the depo. I have a lack of energy, decreased enjoyment in things. I work as a nurse, and it's a stressful job already- but little things can set me off now or make me cry. It has made me want to quit my job- and created problems at work, and within my friends and family. I even dislike myself at times. Lately I have had to check my feelings to see if they are real, or likely a mood swing. I have had some spotting on the second shot, but it is great to not have a period. The second shot side effects have definitely been worse than the first. The mood swings have subsided some now that I am into the second month of the secodn shot, but I doubt I will take another. I was on Depo 10 years ago for birth control, and I had depression and weight gain after being on it for a year. However, the depression is many times worse now. The weight gain hasn't been bad yet but I am always hungry, and if it weren't for me actively doing weight watchers I would have gained. Read More Read Less

The treatment has been great. After having 3 kids I needed a temporary contraception until my husbands vasectomy was done. I have been on this shot for 6 months and have not had a period, which is fine by me.I have had mood swings which is normal. If you are gaining more then 20pds on the shot it is you not the shot. If you read up on it you do gain a little weight, but not 100 pounds. I did gain 10, but also I have 3 kids and not have been eating the way I should. I have only one more time to take the shot and then will be done, but I think it has been a great alternative to the pill which I had tried 10 different kinds and they all made me sick and the nuvo ring is how I got pregnant with my 1st child.Read More Read Less

I started on this med after I had my son. I was only 19 yrs old. I had gained about 20 lbs from my pregnancy, but the rest as I have discovered is from being on the shot. I am currently 110 lbs overweight, have serious acne, ugly gross man like facial hair, and hair loss from my scalp. It has messed me up completely. I have been off of depo for almost a year now, I was on it for about a year and am still experiacning the side effects. Not only can I not get rid of the facial hair and acne but the weight is impossible to get rid of. I have tried diet and exersice still no luck. I feel horrible. My skin is streched out I weigh 260lbs. When I got pregnant I was 150lbs. I do not recommed this for any women using this just for birth control. I still dont know why my OB-GYN gave me this. Luckly, I swithced GYN and am now on Ocella the generic for Yasmin. And it is finally given me a period after not having one for almost 2 1/2 years. My acne is getting better still not cleared up but getting better. Seriously, I have not had a period until now. Last time was before I got pregnant. I hope this helps. Like I said, I was 170lbs after my son and when I got on Depo, gained 110lbs, acne, facial hair, hair loss, mood swings loss of self esteem and occasional depression. I currently weigh 260lbs and am 21 years old with stretched skin and horrible strech marks all over my body. I also have acne and hair growth on my back, shoulders upper legs (thighs) all over my stomache and my ass. Oh yeah my fingers and toes too! I feel so unsexy and nasty. I do not feel like a woman at ALL! Read More Read Less

i went on the shot to prevent pregnancy and reduce period. i did not have a bad period before. little mood swings or cramps, no heavy bleeding. the first 6 months were a week each (first 3 months then 2nd just b4 next shot) of light bleeding. can't be sure about weight gain as i started taking it just before turning 29 and had been gaining slowly since my mid 20's as many of us do (20lbs total since i was 25 but don't own a scale). in my 9th month (end of 3rd shot) i bled for a month straight. started out brown (in my 8th) like it was in the couple weeks in the first 6 months, then became bright red and stayed on for a month. went to doc got a variety of advise. decided to get a another shot because they had said it could take up to year to adjust. still bleeding (a few weeks into 4th shot). i have been REALLY tired. the kind of tired like no matter how much you sleep it's just not enough. i realize it's winter and i live in rochester, ny (it's really cold and gray in the winter aka winter blues) but i know me and this is a little more then that. i'm not writing to say this is the wrong choice for you but to say if your having similar side affects your not alone and it doesn't seem right to me. i am going to change my doc. i have always relied on clinics having no insurance but i have decided to contact a local midwife group. didn't realize until recently you can go to them even if your not planning to reproduce. reading these posts scared me a bit but i remind myself if i was happy with the shot i wouldn't be searching the internet and then posting. so for those of you just researching, keep researching and make your own educated decision based on you and your body and a doctor you trust. we are all different.Read More Read Less

I am so glad to see the FDA is talking about the bone loss. I was on depo for almost 7 years and off for 4 now, I didn't really notice the side effects, 90 lbs, acne, no intrest in sex, etc. But now I am still feeling the residule effects. My teeth are destroyed, they cysts have come back worse than before, and now it has been noticed that my joints are crumbling. Drs think all is related to longterm use and I've talked with other long term users having the same problems. Short term use maybe I can see, but beware the side effects last a long time and some are permenant.Read More Read Less

I do not have a cycle while on medication so the Endometriosis does not bother me at all and that's great. I do not have any side affects that I am aware of.

I had a partial hysterectomy but kept one ovary. That ovary is now having problems with painful cysts. My doctor put me on the shot to trick it to think I was pregnant. The problem I have with the shot is the fact I have gained almost 40 pounds since I started it and have absolutely no interest in sex. I am a nurse and would not recommend taking this medication. I plan on nat taking my next shot and would rather lose my ovary then go through the weight gain and feeling I am inadequate for my husband.Read More Read Less

I DO NOT RECOMMEND! After this shot, I have been bleeding for 3 months straight! EVERYDAY I'm bleeding, its more than just 'spotting', and I think I'm getting depressed over it! The shot is supposed to be wearing off now.... but it hasn't! I don't know what to do! :( DONT GET THE SHOT!

Do not recommend this to anyone-worst mistake I ever made. I have only had 2 shots but have never felt this bad in my life! Mood swings, fatigue, can't sleep, can't eat,no sex drive, can't move-can't do anything! Feel like absolute crap! I don't even feel like myself anymore. Also I have not had a period in over 6 months-which I don't like because its a natural process for our bodies and not having it does not feel healthy or natural to me. I was on the patch before and was fine but my doctor said to try this because of my age-I'm 32-he said it would be safer-i would rather use condoms than feel like this! I'm going to go back on the patch again and hopefully this shot is out of my system soon. Please read about all the side effects of this medication before you get it!Read More Read Less

Currently I am still on the Depo, but I am highly considering not getting my next doseage. I get very tired, from doing hardly anything! I haven't experienced alot of weight gain. maybe like... 5 to 10 lbs. One MAJOR reason that I would like to stop though, is the lack of my sex drive. It was fine before this, and now its gone. I'm just hoping that it will come back. Also, from reading other reports I am now VERY worried about not getting pregnant after I stop this birth control... I really wish my doctor would have informed me more about all of this.... It is easy to use and it did its job of not getting me pragnant, but at what price?Read More Read Less

I do not suggest this bc at all. It was the worst mistake i ever made. It made me gain 20 pounds and I had lots of break through bleeding. My skin got worse too and I have always have good skin and this made my skin greasy even my hair. I suggest to think really hard about it if you are wanting to go on it!

I have been on this twice. Prior to my daughter being born I used this and loved it. I didn't have any of the side effects talked about. It took 1 1/2 years to get pregnant, which was alright with me. I went back on it after my daughter was born and gained 20 pounds. I am seriously looking for another form of birth control now with less side effects. I can't lose the weight. The only thing that I will miss is not getting a period.

I have been on depo for almost ten years with a two year break. The first 5 or 6 yrs were great, no weight gain, acne, or any other side effects. The second time around i have gained about 40 pds in 2 years, have stubborn acne, and am chronically tired. I have not had any periods, which is a blessing, but now im concerned about bone density and will be getting the test done asap

I have been on depo for about three years now. I have yet to have any problems with it. I haven't had a period since I started getting the shot. About every other shot I have light bleeding which last about 2 days. I havent had any weight gain and my sx drive has not been affcted. I looked into a lot of different options when i started birth control and if you look at reviews of other birth control methods you will notice a lot of the same complaints. It is all in how your body reacts to it. what works for one dosn't work for all. Oevr all I would reccomend depo as a good choice, but if after the first shot you have problems then STOP because they plobably aren't going to change.Read More Read Less
