I suffered from cluster migraines since the age of 17. I'm now 48. Since 17, I tried everything- Caffergot, Midrin, Fioricet along with practically every OTC known to man! All with little or no effect. The downside is that I suffered for years- until Imitrex came along. horrible side effect. Imitrex is awful and terribly expensive.

I have had migraines since childhood, often for three days at a time. Until I had Imitrex I just had to deal with the pain as best I could. Usually it works within 30 minutes to an hour. Since I usually wake up with the migraine, I also try to go back to sleep. (I'm disabled so usually I cancel whatever and do this.) Only rarely do I need a second 25mg tablet (generic). At that dosage I have none of the burning, dizziness, etc. that people on higher doses or injections write about. I do have to catch the migraine when it starts for the medicine to work. I want to stay low dose because of controlled high blood pressure and prediabetes and being after menopause. Some doctors would take me if Imitrex entirely but what to do then? Suffer-no thanks!Read More Read Less

I would say that 90% of the time it does work for me. However, after injection into my nose the medicine seeps throw the top of my mouth with is ungodly taste. I gag every time I take it and come close to throwing up if I don't eat it with food. When it works it is effective though.

I started getting migraines after taking phen phen well right after they banned the one phen. I have had MRI with contrast etc to make sure there's nothing bad going on in my brain. My migraines come with vomit and sensitivity to light sound smells. I went to the hospital a few times and they injected me with some drugs that made me feel high. The next time I had an episode I asked them to not inject me with anything that makes me feel high. They gave me imitrex and in a few minutes I felt a heat like pressure starting in my neck and going over my head after that the migraine was gone! I have to experienced and other side effects but must admit after reading all the reviews am kind of scared about my heart being I'm already overweight. I get 9 pills a month at 100mg and the DR told me to cut in half to get more. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this medication it really works for me.Read More Read Less

I have suffered from extreme migraines since the sixth (11 years old) grade. They have worsened over time. I am now 19. My doctor first prescribed me the 100 mg pills and later the injections to give myself at onset of migraine. If I provide myself with the injection and and anti-inflamatory i am prescribed, I am 9/10 times in great shape and the migraine is gone within half of an hour. I swear by imitrex. The side effects of this medication are a burn in the nose when it kicks in (almost immediate) and chest tightening but that is all. Read More Read Less

I suffered with migraine headaches for over 5 years that no pain reliever, narcotic or otherwise, helped. They often lasted 3 days and I normally ended up in Emergency. My very first dose of Imitrex completely relieved the pain in 45 minutes.

I suffered from cluster migraines since the age of 17. I'm now 48. Since 17, I tried everything- Caffergot, Midrin, Fioricet along with practically every OTC known to man! All with little or no effect. The downside is that I suffered for years- until Imitrex came along. I remember the first dose I took of it, sent me into a tailspin, but as I adjusted to the side-effects, it was clear I had FINALLY found a cure. Anyone who truly knows what a migraine is, knows that there's no other pain you would rather NOT have than that of a migraine! I can recall having some so bad that I went so far as to attempt to "knock myself out!" That may sound nuts, but again, those who truly get them, can certainly identify with me. Imitrex turned out to be the one thing that has worked for me. If you've not tried it, do so. Oddly, the sensation it creates (for me at least) is one of experiencing some of the symptoms of the episode- watery eye(s); slight dizziness- but a "wall" between you and the pain. Literally, when I was taking Imitrex at the onset of an episode, after about an hour or so you can actually feel the veins in your head pounding, but the pain seems effectively 'blocked.' By the time I was 44, I wanted to find out if there was more of a preventative out there to do away with this torture for good, because despite the relief I got from Imitrex, I was still getting hit with the 'aftershocks' of a cluster episode- which is a feeling of having been hit by a TRAIN! A doctor put me on a taper of Prednisone- about 4-5 separate occasions. I have not had a cluster since. It's been 5 years now, and God knows I do not miss them! If you're curious about Imitrex, definitely give it a whirl. I recommend though, that one try Prednisone. It's a cheap, and relatively simple steroid to take. Was it the cure for me? I cannot be totally sure, but it sure was easier to try than attempting to knock myself out cold from pain! ;-)Read More Read Less

I started on the injection version of Imitrex 20 years ago when it first came out. I was very thankful when the tablet came out, and even more so when it went generic. Works for most classic migraines especially if caught early. Occasionally have to take second after an hour. If the migraine is sinus related, then usually have to pair with a sinus medicine such as Tylenol Severe Sinus. I do always experienced the side effect of some tingling in fingers and sensitivity to skin.

I take the generic, from "Dr. Reddy"'s labs. Nothing else worked until a few years ago, when my Dr. prescribed this. 100 mg. pills, which I break in half. It is amazing ! Gets rid of the migraine completely, with no odd, spacy, or sedated ("narcotic") feeling. It even works if you already have the migraine, such as waking up with one. It takes about 10-25 mins. to set in, and then you can go about your day or work. I experience a little jaw clenchiness, but it's nothing painful or debilitating. Very infrequently, I have to take the other half of the pill an hour or 2 later if I don't feel completely better. Also, I don't feel exhausted the next day, like usual after a migraine. I love this stuff, it has saved me !Read More Read Less

Used to get incredibly bad migraines and was prescribed Imitrex as a test to see if it would help, but if anything it makes the migraines worse. I get very nauseous for hours after taking it, my forhead feels like its lit on fire, just a horrible searing pain. When I didn't have an aversion to noise before taking, I would develop it. Everyone experiences drugs differently but my own personal experience with this drug is bad.

I take the generic which is now available (thank God) for TENSION headaches. I am not sure I have real migraines. Yes, I can feel one coming on, yes, it is only on one side, but the rest of the symptoms of migraine, I just don't get. That being said, my headaches are horrible and usually last about 3-4 days, if I don't take my Imitrex. I had gone to the dr and he pushed on my TRAPEZIUS muscle--hey, I had to look it up too, so don't feel bad and I nearly fell to the floor it hurt so badly. And that muscle goes up to the head. So when I get one of these "headaches" it's from tension in that muscle. Long story short, anatomy class is over....Imitrex kicks it's butt! The pain radiates into the back of my neck and head and into ONE eyebrow area. When I take Imitrex, it's almost like a huge syringe is sucking the pain out. I can feel it leaving my body. Now most of you are probably thing that this woman is nuts, but bottom line, the drug works for me. And it's not cheap either and thanks to Obama care, I won't be able to get it any more. I could kick myself because I had a couple of refills on the script. Oh well. I have headaches (call them whatever you like) and Imitrex works. NO bad side effects-----HOWEVER........... Read the label. It can and DOES raise "uncontrolled" blood pressure. So just remember to take your BP meds while taking Imitrex. It WILL raise your pressure. but it will go down when it's over. My episodes usually last about 3 days. Do NOT take any more than what it says on the bottle. I think it states that you should NOT take more than 2 in a 24 hour period and if you are doing that, then face it..Imitrex isn't for you. My poor mother had migraines that would have her in bed vomiting with one side of her face swollen. I wish Imitrex had been around back then. My God, she suffered. Ok class is dismissed. You are all free to go to recess. Peace (don't suffer. ASK your dr for an RX!) It is a life saver. Read More Read Less

I have been taking the Imitrex pills for years now for vestibular migraines, and if I take them at the onset of a vertigo attack, I found that within 2 hours the attack would start to subside, however, it would get worse before it started to subside. The next day I was still left with the "migraine hangover", but no dizziness. Just 2 days ago, I woke with a vertigo attack and took the Imitrex injection for the first time. My Neuro said it would work quicker than the pills. The side effects were very different and kinda scared me. I could feel the medication move through my body like mild pins and needles, and my neck and back of head had muscle spasms...freaked me out. My entire body got very heavy, especially my eyelids, but all that only lasted about 20 minutes, then subsided. The injection itself burns big time!!! The dizziness took 4 hours to leave this time, and I still had the migraine hangover. Overall, this works great to stop the attacks and it beats spending 2-3 days spinning in circles. The pills are slow to work, but they do work. The injection..I'm still unsure of. I'll try it again in the future before giving up on it, at least now I know what to expect.Read More Read Less

I am a 45 year old woman who started having migraines about 5 years ago due to horomone shifts every month before my period. My first migraine landed me in the hospital thinking I was having a stroke. Slurred speech, horrible, crushing pain in the base of my skull. Was given Imitrex and haven't tried anything else since. Starting dose was 25mg, which was way too little and necessitated my taking 3 or more pills with each migraine. Had it upped to 100mg by a new doctor and while it does work, the side effects for me suck. I have to catch the mirgraine very early or the day will be spent in bed no matter what dose I'm on. I have a weird thing where the migraine gets WORSE before getting better with Imitrex. Not fun. It seems to exaggerate the symptoms for about an hour before finally easing symptoms, usually while I nap. Definite feeling of throat being tight, lower jaw as well. BUT. That being said, compared to the migraine, I'll take it gladly.Read More Read Less

This worked great for me. The shot worked within 3 minutes and the pills worked for me also. If I woke up with one I had to wait until the vomiting stopped to take it. I had no side effects and it didn't make me sleepy which was a big help when working.
