    Metoclopramide Hcl


    What should I know regarding pregnancy, nursing and administering Metoclopramide Hcl to children or the elderly?

    An adult over 60:

    management or monitoring precaution: Neurological and psychiatric adverse effects observed with greater risk of tardive dyskinesia. Avoid high doses and long duration of use. Therapy longer than 12 weeks is NOT recommended. Risk of developing parkinsonian-like reactions increases with ascending doses. Discontinue use if parkinsonian-like reactions occur. Sedation is more common in elderly and contributes to increased confusion and falls. Renal assessment and dose reduction even with starting dose if CrCL < 40mL/min.

    Giving metoclopramide HCl to a child under 12:

    Contraindication: Extrapyramidal effects more likely to occur in children age < 1 year. Rare risk of tardive dyskinesia with prolonged administration. Risk of methemoglobinemia in neonates.

    Severe Precaution: Increased risk of extrapyramidal effects in pediatrics. Rare risk of tardive dyskinesia with prolonged administration.
