    What should I know regarding pregnancy, nursing and administering Valium to children or the elderly?

    If you are:

    Pregnant:

    FDB Contraindicated or Not Recommended: RISK OF MALFORMATIONS IF USED IN 1ST TRIM; WITHDRAWAL SX IF USED IN 3RD TRIM

    Nursing:

    Absolute Contraindication: NOT RECOMMENDED: INFANT SEDATION, LETHARGY, FEEDING DIFFICULTY.

    An adult over 60:

    management or monitoring precaution: General-Due to the long drug half-life and active metabolites, the elderly are at increased risk of adverse psychiatric and paradoxical reactions. Limit to short term use and maximum dose of 5 mg/day. Neuro/Psych-Elderly have a much higher risk for sedation, depression, cognitive impairment and falls. Renal-Active metabolites are renally excreted. Use caution in renal impairment with initial dosing starting with 2 to 2.5 mg/day and titrate as tolerated.

    Giving Valium to a child under 12:

    Contraindication: Not recommended in children under 6 months due to insufficient safety information.
